English for Academic Purposes Instructor – Boost Program (in-person)

About Us

Western’s English Language Centre (WELC) provides programs for students to meet Western’s undergraduate and graduate English Language Proficiency requirements for degree programs. Through both language and socio-cultural instruction, the Centre ensures that students are prepared to meet the English language requirements of their program, supporting their academic success.

Responsibilities

Modality: In-person. Weekly hours will include instructional time, grading, attendance at meetings, and other administrative duties.

Position Summary:

The English Boost Program Instructor works to guide students in developing their language proficiency and academic skills. Instructors will deliver engaging lessons, maintain online course materials, administer and grade assessments and support the integrity of the assessment environment, evaluate and report on student achievement, and provide prompt and meaningful feedback to students to support their learning and development. The instructor works closely with program guidelines and contributes to a consistent, supportive, and student-centred educational experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction & Classroom Delivery

- Deliver engaging, student-centred lessons using provided curriculum and instructional materials
- Facilitate in-personsynchronous classes in accordance with program standards and current, inclusive pedagogical approaches
- Adapt instructional delivery to meet diverse learner needs while maintaining course objectives
- Foster an inclusive, respectful, and participatory classroom environment

Assessment & Evaluation
- Administer tests, quizzes, and assignments as outlined in the program
- Grade and provide timely, clear, and constructive feedback on student work
- Maintain accurate records of grades and assessments
- Coordinate with supervisor and other instructors to ensure grading is standardized across sections of the same course
- Submit grades and assessments to supervisor for their approval

Student Support & Engagement
- Monitor student progress and identify learners who may require additional support
- Provide academic guidance and refer students to appropriate campus resources when needed




- Support student wellbeing, motivation, and persistence in the program
- Maintain regular communication with students regarding their performance and progress

Reporting & Administration
- Complete required reports on student progress, attendance, and outcomes
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation
- Respond to administrative communications in a timely manner

Collaboration & Qualified Responsibilities
- Attend staff meetings as required
- Collaborate with colleagues and program coordinators to ensure consistency in program delivery
- Uphold institutional policies, procedures, and academic integrity standards

Qualifications

Education and Experience

- Completed or in the process of completing a Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Professional Education, Curriculum studies, or a related field (preferred)
- 4 years' experience teaching English as a second language at thepost-secondarylevel

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Expertise and experience in adult education and ESL/EAP teaching, learning, and effective, equitable assessment principles at the post-secondary level
- Advanced knowledge of English language systems (grammar, discourse, rhetorical context, vocabulary development) and their applications to academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking
- Familiarity with Canadian postsecondary academic expectations and standards
- Skilled in scaffolding complex academic skills such as essay writing, critical analysis, and research-based assignments
- Ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs
- Commitment to Culturally Responsive Teaching and validating students’ varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- Experience teaching multilingual and multicultural student populations, with a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and accessibility




- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to maintain student engagement
- Ability to assess student language proficiency and provide timely, constructive, and individualized guidance and feedback to support student progression
- Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; demonstrated proficiency in oral and written academic English communication
- Ability to work independently collaboratively with colleagues, student support services, and academic units
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to meet grading deadlines and administrative requirements
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, learning management systems, and other educational technologies to support instruction. Familiarity with Brightspace and Moodle learning management systemsis an asset
