Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for an up to 6 month temporary position of Fleet Trades Person-Automotive Mechanic with Emergency Fleet (Police).

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the mechanic will be accountable to perform maintenance work on the Police Fleet. The successful candidate must be able and willing to move to another work location should the employer deem it necessary. The incumbent would be subject to noise, odours, grease and dirt associated with a garage environment. The primary work location is 1975 Gottingen Street, Halifax
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Diagnose, determine the source and extent of, and carry out the necessary repairs to all types of equipment, diesel/gas, and hydraulic equipment contained in a major municipal fleet operation
- Must be willing to accept necessary training in related courses
- To continuously take necessary training to successfully pass and stay current on Emergency Vehicle Technician Levels
- Maintain a safe and healthy workplace, per the Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Must have a good working knowledge of Preventative
- Maintenance and how it pertains to a fleet operation
- Complete and maintain electronic work orders and necessary records, as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12, or equivalent education and experience
- Must possess a valid NS Journeyman Mechanic’s License in Automotive Service Technician
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of Fleet vehicles (in municipal operation would be an asset)
- Working knowledge of Harley Davidson Motorcycles, an asset
- Working knowledge of emergency lighting systems, an asset
- Welding ability and the ability to use acetylene torches, an asset
- Must have a good attendance and work record
- Must possess a valid Class 5 N.S. drivers' license,
with a good driving record (a current Driver’s Abstract will be required before appointment)
- Must have own hand tools
- Must be available to work in emergency situations
Security Clearance Requirements: Candidates being considered for the position of Fleets Trades Person Emergency Fleet must successfully meet the security clearance requirements administered by Halifax Regional Police. Candidates must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and have valid licensing, as required.

WORK STATUS: Temporary- up to 6 months
HOURS OF WORK: 8:00am - 4:00pm, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week)
SALARY: $41.52 per hour as per CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement
SALARY: $41.52 per hour, as per the Collective Agreement between CUPE, Local 108 and Halifax Regional Municipality.
WORK LOCATION: Police Fleet Garage - 1975 Gottingen Street, Halifax

Paid Vacation Time
Employees receive fifteen (15) working days paid vacation.
Additional vacation time is increased at employment anniversary intervals.

Annual Tool Allowance
Employees are required to provide their own tools but receive an annual tool allowance to assist in their procurement of advanced and new tools required to fulfill their roles. HRM provides some specialized tools that are shared amongst employees, when required.
Safety Equipment
Employees are provided all required safety equipment including, but not limited to, footwear and coveralls.
Sick Leave Benefits
Employees accrue sick leave perks throughout their employment which enable them to receive paid sick leave through illness, injury or accident where other payment is not received under the Workers' Compensation Act, for periods that their accrual supports.
