The Invasive Species Assistant supports the Ecological Stewardship team in managing invasive plant species and restoring native habitats within Royal Botanical Gardens’ environmental protection areas. This role focuses on the removal of invasive woody and herbaceous plants, with occasional herbicide application under supervision. The position involves fieldwork across varied terrain and collaboration with RBG staff and volunteers.

This is a contract position commencing on September 28, 2026 and concluding December 11, 2026.

Key Responsibilities

- Implement invasive plant management techniques, including manual removal and pesticide application.
- Assist in planting native trees and shrubs at restoration sites.
- Provide insights and recommendations to senior ecological staff to support strategic invasive species management and restoration planning.
- Supervise and guide volunteers in protected and effective invasive species removal.
- Contribute to reports and presentations by collecting and analyzing data on species removal, IPM techniques, and restoration outcomes.

Knowledge and Skills

- Knowledge of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for invasive plants in Southern Ontario.
- Experience in invasive species management and ecological restoration.
- Familiarity with urban ecosystem dynamics and stakeholder engagement.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint) and GIS tools (ArcPro, Field Maps).
- Ability to identify invasive and native plant species accurately.
- Skilled in executing pest management plans in compliance with environmental standards.




- Strong communication skills for presenting information to both technical and general audiences.
- Capable of mentoring and motivating volunteers in fieldwork settings.
- Technical proficiency in data management and reporting to support ecological decision-making.
- Valid class G driver license and a clean driving record required to obtain and maintain vehicle insurance.

Working Conditions:

- This position requires working a minimum 35-hour work week, including weekends as required as selected projects are influenced by weather conditions and volunteers.
- Outdoor work in most weather conditions and environments.
