An eligibility list may be created for similar positions and will remain in effect for 12 months. Introduction The OCME investigates unexpected deaths and cases when the cause of death is not immediately known or when the death is the result of violence due to an accident, suicide, or homicide.

The Manitoba Fatality Inquiries

Act gives the Chief Medical Examiner the responsibility for the investigation of all unexpected and violent deaths occurring in the Province. Medical doctors throughout Manitoba are appointed as Medical Examiners and carry out investigations on behalf of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office. They are assisted in their investigation by medical examiner investigators or police officers.

Under the direction of the Executive Director or a Provincial Medical Examiner, the incumbent will be responsible to investigate circumstances surrounding sudden and violent deaths in the City of Winnipeg and periphery including rural Manitoba. This will involve:

Attending scenes of death including unpredictable environments and taking scene photographs

Preparing complex reports

Providing coordination and management at locations of death including direction of law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, body transport service members, health care Providers, media, members of the public and family

Conducting telephone communication with family members,



law enforcement and other health care professionals

Transporting biological specimens

Supporting individuals and families through periods of stress

Qualifications

Essential

Must be a Registered Nurse, with either a Bachelor of Nursing degree or a Diploma in Nursing from one of the former recognized schools of nursing,



including significant acute care experience

Experience supporting individuals who are experiencing difficult, traumatic, and stressful situations

Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders

Effective written communication skills

Effective verbal communication skills

Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet conflicting deadlines

Strong political acumen and the ability to manage confidential, controversial or politically/medically sensitive material and situations in an appropriate manner

Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Ability to cope with stress with frequent exposure to traumatic situations

Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision

Desired

Knowledge of The Fatality Inquiries Act, Anatomy Act, Human Tissue Gift Acts, Personal Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Vital Statistics Acts

Investigative experience Conditions of Employment:

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Must posses and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Search with Vulnerable Sector Search, Satisfactory Adult and Child Abuse Registry Checks and, Enhanced Security Screening

Valid Class 5 Drivers License with access to a personal vehicle for business purposes

Nurses must be eligible to register and maintain a licence with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba

Ability to travel within the designated area, be available for rotating work shifts within a 24/7 organization (covering the hours of 07:30 to 15:45 hours), handle stand-by/on-call designation (15:45 to 07:30 hours and weekends) and respond to call-in situations in a timely manner
