Senior Avionics Systems Engineer – Open IMA Platform Development & Certification | ARINC 653 | DO-297 | ARP4754A | Avionics Systems Engineering

Technical Skills

- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Electronics Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Systems Engineering
- 12–20+ years in Avionics Systems Engineering with direct hands-on experience in Open IMA/IMA platform development, integration, and certification on commercial, business jet, military, or advanced air mobility aircraft programs.

Must Have

- Experience should include one or more of the following:
- FAA certification programs
- EASA certification programs
- TCCA certification programs
- Certification projects involving major avionics OEMs.

Valuable to Have

- Practical experience in:
- ARINC 653 partitioned operating environments
- Open IMA architectures
- AFDX / ARINC 664 networking
- Platform resource management
- System integration and verification
- DO-297 IMA lifecycle processes
- Certification support activities with FAA and/or EASA.

Responsibilities

IMA System Architecture Definition

- Define and maintain Open IMA system architectures aligned with aircraft and system-level requirements.
- Develop architecture concepts for hosted applications within partitioned computing environments.
- Allocate aircraft functions across IMA modules while ensuring compliance with safety, performance, and certification requirements.
- Define partitioning strategies for:
- Applications
- Operating systems
- Shared platform resources
- Communication services
- Establish architecture principles supporting reusability, scalability, maintainability, and certification.




- Perform system-level trade studies and architecture evaluations.
- Define and maintain:
- Functional architectures
- Logical architectures
- Physical architectures
- Deployment architectures
- Support safety-driven architecture decisions derived from:
- FHA
- PSSA
- SSA
- Ensure compliance with:
- ARINC 653
- ARINC 664
- DO-297
- ARP4754A

Platform Integration & Configuration
- Lead integration of avionics applications onto Open IMA platforms.
- Configure:
- ARINC 653 partitions
- Scheduling tables
- Health monitoring functions
- Communication channels
- I/O assignments
- Perform resource allocation activities:
- CPU utilization analysis
- Memory allocation
- Network bandwidth allocation
- Latency analysis
- Manage hosted application deployment.
- Support platform integration testing and troubleshooting.
- Analyze integration risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Resolve issues associated with:
- Partition timing
- Resource conflicts
- Inter-partition communication
- Network performance
- Platform startup sequences
- Coordinate platform releases and configuration baselines.

Certification & Compliance Activities
- Support certification of Open IMA platforms in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Develop and review certification evidence and compliance artifacts.
- Support certification audits and authority interactions.




- Ensure traceability between:
- Requirements
- Architecture
- Design
- Verification activities
- Coordinate compliance activities across development teams.
- Support planning and execution of certification reviews.
- Contribute to compliance demonstrations for:
- FAA
- EASA
- Other certification authorities
- Demonstrated working knowledge of:
- DO-297
- DO-178C
- DO-254
- ARP4754A
- ARP4761A
- DO-160
- DO-330 (preferred)
- AC 20-115D (preferred)

Standards & Interface Management
- Manage system interfaces between hosted applications, platform services, and aircraft systems.
- Define interface control documentation.
- Ensure platform compliance with applicable avionics standards.
- Support AFDX network architecture development.
- Define communication mechanisms using:
- ARINC 653
- ARINC 664
- CAN
- Ethernet
- Serial interfaces
- Maintain interface traceability across program baselines.
- Coordinate interface changes across stakeholders.
- Support interoperability and compatibility assessments.

Technical Leadership & Problem Resolution
- Serve as technical focal point for Open IMA architecture and platform integration activities.
- Lead technical reviews and design assessments.
- Drive resolution of complex integration and certification issues.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
- Establish engineering best practices.
- Support customer and stakeholder reviews.
- Evaluate technical risks and recommend mitigation plans.
- Coordinate with:
- Systems Engineering
- Software Engineering
- Hardware Engineering
- Safety Engineering
- Verification & Validation Teams
- Certification Teams.
