Under the direction of the Chef, the Sous Chef is responsible for the effective and efficient management of all aspects of the food and beverage operations of a designated Community. The Sous Chef will maintain positive relationships with residents, families and the neighbouring community, and will demonstrate leadership on a daily basis by embracing the corporate philosophy and culture of the operation.

The Sous Chef will ensure that standards of hygiene and food service are met and all operations comply with United Active Living (UAL) policy and applicable legislation, regulations and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

1) Food Services Management:

- Provide input into menu plans and food services operational procedures.
- Supervises and is responsible for the preparation of menu items to: ensure quality standards are maintained, food production requirements are forecasted appropriately on a daily basis, portions are appropriate and wastage is minimized.
- Trains staff on the preparation, execution and quality of menu items.
- Prepares the menu items (works the line) when service is busy or staffing is low.
- In the absence of the Chef, completes ordering, receiving, inventory and reporting tasks/practices.
- Actively participates in dining room services.
- Assist in creating a relaxed and fun work environment for staff.
- Ensures sanitation, OHS, and safe food handling legislation are met on a daily basis.
- Seeks out resident feedback on food quality, preferences and recipes, and acts to resolve any customer service issues which may arise.
- Collaborates with all managers, and specifically the Resident Care Manager to deliver menu items which meets residents’ needs.
- Maintains confidentiality in regards to residents and operational practices.

2) Financial Resource Management:

- Operates the department within the parameters of the established budgets.
- Facilitates the regular flow of accurate and current financial information with the Chef and Food Services Manager.

3) Other Duties

- With support of the Chef,



ensures that all Safety related legislation, processes, and procedures are understood, adhered to, and maintained by Food Services Staff.
- Facilitates collaborative communication between management, departments, staff and clients, and acts to resolve miscommunications.
- Promotes and demonstrates a continuous learning philosophy, with the objective of improving the quality of care and services across the community.
- Designs and delivers appropriate orientation and on-going staff education opportunities, in collaboration with managers and staff.
- Ensures that appropriate documentation and record keeping is maintained in accordance with corporate policy, and all federal and provincial legislation, as it pertains to the community.
- Collaborates with all leaders to ensure the delivery of services within all aspects of the operation is in alignment with the corporate vision, mission and goals.
- Participates in activities and events of the community, including welcoming and greeting to new residents and their families.
- Actively seeks opportunities to build and maintain relationships based on trust and mutual respect with all managers, staff, residents and the community at large.

Qualifications

- Post-secondary education in professional cooking, with Journeyman certification
- 3-5 years of cooking experience, including supervision of staff, preferably in an Assisted Living or Full-Service Retirement setting.
- Demonstrated skills in service excellence
- Experience with client interaction in a community setting.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Robust computer skills, including experience in ordering,



inventory control, etc.

Pay: $25.60-$28.80 per hour
