Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Thermal Spray Technician to join our production team. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and maintaining High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) spray, Twin wire arc, Combustion Spray and Ceramic Spray equipment to apply protective and wear-resistant coatings to industrial components.
This position requires strong knowledge of thermal spray processes, surface preparation, coating parameters, quality-control requirements, and safe handling of gases, powders, and specialized equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Thermal spray equipment according to approved procedures, work instructions, and customer specifications.
- Apply carbide, metallic, alloy, and other thermal spray coatings to industrial components.
- Review work orders, drawings, coating specifications, and technical requirements before beginning each job.
- Select the appropriate spray gun, coating material and other process parameters.
- Prepare parts for coating through masking, cleaning, grit blasting, preheating, and other required surface-preparation processes.
- Inspect components before spraying to confirm that surfaces are properly prepared
- Monitor spray parameters throughout the coating process to ensure consistency and quality.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on Thermal spray equipment.
- Follow all company safety procedures for compressed gases, combustible fuels, ventilation systems, noise exposure, dust, and high-temperature operations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Work closely with quality-control, machining, grinding, engineering, and production personnel.
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience operating Thermal spray equipment is required.
- Experience applying tungsten carbide, chromium carbide, metallic alloy, or similar protective coatings is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Thermal spray principles, equipment, process parameters, and coating applications.
- Experience with surface preparation, grit blasting, masking, and coating inspection.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, work instructions, technical data sheets, and customer specifications.
- Experience using micrometers, vernier calipers, coating-thickness gauges, profilometers, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to work within specified coating thicknesses and dimensional tolerances.
- Robust mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to recognize coating defects and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Good attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Ability to complete production and quality-control documentation accurately.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
- Thermal spray training, certification, or related technical education is considered an asset.
- Experience with robotic or automated thermal spray systems is considered an asset.
- Experience with HVOF spray, arc spray, flame spray, machining, or precision grinding is considered an asset.
- Forklift and overhead-crane certification are considered assets.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all occupational health and safety requirements and company procedures.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment, including respiratory, hearing, eye, face, hand, and body protection.
- Inspect gas lines, hoses, regulators, connections, ventilation systems, and safety devices before operation.
- Report equipment defects, unsafe conditions, spills, leaks, or process concerns immediately.
- Follow approved procedures for handling compressed gases, fuel gases, oxygen, powders, and hazardous materials.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift and move parts, materials, and equipment weighing up to [50 pounds].
- Ability to bend, reach, crouch, and work around industrial equipment.
- Ability to work in an environment involving heat, noise, dust, fumes, and rotating machinery.
- Ability to wear respiratory protection and other required personal protective equipment.
