Mara Karlin, PhD is a national security leader with decades of experience shaping geopolitics at the highest levels of the U.S. government. She is a professor at Johns Hopkins University-SAIS and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. She served in national security roles for six secretaries of defense, advising on strategic planning, risk management, defense budgeting, the future of conflict, and regional affairs.
Confirmed by the U.S. Senate, she served as assistant secretary of defense for strategy, plans, and capabilities, leading the 2022 National Defense Strategy, informing the work of 3M people and $850B. Previously, she led DoD relations with nearly 150 countries.
She published two books and received the SecDef Distinguished Public Service Medal.
