Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Utility Locator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for accurately locating and marking underground utility lines to ensure safe excavation and construction practices. This role requires a solid understanding of utility systems. The Utility Locator will work closely with construction teams and must prioritize safety and efficiency in all tasks.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience locating underground infrastructure, however candidates with general telecom industry outside plant experience may be considered for on the job training.

The successful candidate will work as part of the team of Vianet damage prevention technicians responsible for locating Vianet’s underground fibre optic network throughout York, Durham and Peel Regions and Simcoe County. While the primary focus is cable locating, it is expected that a considerable portion of time will be related to other telecom duties such as service installation.

Responsibilities

- Accurately locate and mark underground utility lines as per Ontario 1 Call guidlines and using specialized equipment.
- Conduct thorough inspections of job sites to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Collaborate with construction teams to provide guidance on safe digging practices around marked utilities.
- Maintain detailed records of utility locations and any changes made during the project.
- Other duties as required

Qualifications
- Proven experience in utility line locating or a related field is preferred.




- An understanding of telecom OSP networks is an asset
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions while adhering to safety standards.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
- Valid Ontario drivers license is required (Full G)
- Familiarity with electrical systems, wiring practices, and welding techniques.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools and power tools for excavation and utility marking tasks.
- Knowledge of safety standards associated with excavation, heavy equipment operation, electrical work, and welding.
- Prior experience in utility locating or related infrastructure projects is preferred but not mandatory.
