Position:

Cortland Credit has an opening for a Director, Underwriting on its team. This position will be located in our Toronto office at 200 Bay Street.

Overview:

The Director, Underwriting will report to the Chief Investment Officer and will be responsible for the end-to-end management and execution of the firm’s investment process covering all private credit investments; primarily asset-based loans made to lower middle market borrowers in North America and Western Europe. They will lead a team of analysts and associates to ensure timely and fulsome analysis, memo generation and structuring for all current credit investments and will work collaboratively with other teams in the firm in execution. The Director will be responsible for conducting and maintaining industry research for all sub-industries in which Cortland is active or seeks to be active in lending to, and will be an internal insight resource for all other members of the firm.

Major Responsibilities:

- Oversee the review of pipeline credit facilities and conduct general financial, asset and industry analysis with increasing granularity as investments move to later stages.
- Ensure timely creation and updates of investment data rooms.
- Build and manage financial models of varying complexity for prospective and existing borrowers.
- Lead due diligence calls with management of prospective borrowers, third-party advisors and internal stakeholders.




- Ensure all third-party due diligence is conducted in a timely and thorough manner.
- Assist in the firm’s syndication and loan structuring processes.
- Create and ensure quality memos for all new investments and all amendments or similar actions thereafter.
- Conduct and maintain research on key sectors, industries and/or sub-industries.
- Lead and/or execute individual or recurring projects as required.

Skills & Qualification Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Business, Economics, Finance, etc.)
- 5 to 10+ years of underwriting experience in ABL, specialty finance, or commercial credit with a focus on non-sponsored borrowers.
- Proven experience underwriting senior secured asset-based credit facilities from $5MM to $50MM.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Highly analytical and strong ability to synthesize minute yet material information.
- Strong writing and proofreading skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship skills.
- Advanced understanding of credit modelling, field exams and general financial analysis.
- Knowledge of common lending and security structures and related structuring processes
- Demonstrated commitment to innovation, testing culture, and continuous improvement.
- Knowledge and proven application of artificial intelligence in investment process workflows.
- Work very well both on their own and in a team environment.
- CFA, CPA or CAIA is highly valued.
- Knowledge of VBA, Python and SQL/SRRS considered a bonus.
