Role Overview

The Principal Developer Advocate is an individual contributor who will report to the Director of Developer Relations. You will shape 1Password’s advocacy function for a current era of developer learning, fostering public conversations about AI security, publishing authoritative content, and prioritizing high‑impact channels that drive product awareness, adoption and feedback at scale. You will represent 1Password Developer Relations at major conferences such as AWS re:Invent, KubeCon, and others, leveraging those in‑person interactions for long‑term impact.

Key Responsibilities

- Engage: Create content that sparks engagement with current and potential 1Password developer community members, at scale, across channels. Generate awareness, engage in great technical conversations, and help users try, contribute to, and give feedback about product workflows.
- Build: Engineer solutions to unsolved user needs that fill gaps, validate approaches, and inspire secure engineering practices in the real world, in collaboration with users and 1Password partners.
- Advocate: Synthesize feedback and conversations with community members and partners into actionable insights for 1Password to improve user‑facing workflows.
- Strategize: Use data to evaluate engagement channels and prioritize those that effectively generate awareness and adoption at scale. Maximize the impact of targeted,

high‑investment activities like conference speaking to generate impact beyond their normal lifespan.
- Speak: Use your speaking experience at large, high‑stakes developer conferences, including KubeCon, re:Invent, and others.
- Enable: Build tools and training to help other 1Password employees engage effectively with the community. These could be speaking training, talk templates, community engagement guidelines, or other tools that scale advocacy beyond the DA team.

Qualifications

- Technical Fluency: 10+ years in technical roles including software or platform engineering, developer advocacy, solution engineering, or other fields.
- Advocacy Experience: 5+ years engaging with developers in visible, public‑facing roles, and advocating for their needs across functions.
- Community Leadership: Experience engaging in sensitive and complex community situations with humility, empathy, judgment, tact, and humor.
- Partner Engagement: Experience collaborating with partners on technical and product marketing integrations and other partnership activities.
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including conference talks, blog posts, tutorials, books, videos, social media, and technical assets such as demo code or reference architectures.
- Connection: Credible voice in the industry with a large technical audience who use your perspective to shape real‑world technical and architectural choices.

Bonus Points

- Security Focus: Experience dealing with security‑conscious developer communities or products (Identity, Auth, DevSecOps).
