Barrister & Solicitor – Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team (FASCL)

Location: Calgary, Alberta. Full time, 36.25 hours per week. Classification: Civil Crown Counsel 1‑3.

Salary ranges (bi‑weekly):

- Civil Crown Counsel 1: $3,947.31 – $4,972.47 (Annual $103,025 – $129,781)
- Civil Crown Counsel 2: $5,593.60 – $6,926.96 (Annual $145,993 – $180,794)
- Civil Crown Counsel 3: $7,450.08 – $8,260.75 (Annual $194,447 – $215,605)

Job responsibilities include:

- Representing Children and Family Services on court applications, trials, and appeals in CYFEA matters at all levels of court.
- Providing legal advice on the CYFEA, the Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, and related Director obligations.
- Representing the Director of Maintenance Enforcement and the Director under Part 5 of the Income and Employment Supports Act in child support matters.
- Preparing legal opinions and advice in written and verbal form for ministries and clients, with confidentiality and sensitivity.
- Drafting transparent, concise legal opinions and court applications.
- Participating in high‑risk and complex proceedings.
- Working collaboratively with clients to advance government priorities and assess legal risks.




- Co‑ordinating legal advice and services across teams.
- Reviewing documents for disclosure in legal proceedings.
- Travelling within Alberta to support clients in regional court locations as necessary.

Minimum qualifications:

- Law degree (LL.B. or JD) and current active membership or immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
- Civil Crown Counsel 1: 0–4 years of experience.
- Civil Crown Counsel 2: Minimum 4 years of experience.
- Civil Crown Counsel 3: Minimum 11 years of experience.

Desired assets:

- Knowledge of CYFEA, the Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, Maintenance Enforcement Act, Family Law Act, and Child Support Guidelines.
- Trial experience in child protection, family law, or criminal contexts.
- Experience with Constitutional/Aboriginal Law and appeals, judicial reviews, or administrative tribunals.
- Negotiation and alternative dispute resolution skills.
- Experience building relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Prior crown prosecutor experience is acceptable.
