The Bookkeeper Role
Key Responsibilities
Perform full-cycle bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients
Reconcile bank, credit card, tax accounts and other balance sheet accounts
Prepare and file HST/GST returns and payroll remittances
Process payroll and maintain payroll records
Assist new clients with setup of chart of accounts and train on processes for recording their own bookkeeping, and remain available for follow-up questions and quarterly check-ins
Prepare catch‑up and sometimes correct messy bookkeeping as needed for preparation of year‑end files
Prepare working papers for year‑end engagements
Support partners and professional accounting staff with year‑end files and other tax reporting requirements
Communicate directly with clients regarding bookkeeping
Communicate with partners and managers on status of jobs, deadlines and client issues
Maintain accurate and organized digital records
Knowledge and Skills
Minimum 5+ years of bookkeeping experience, preferably in a public accounting firm
Strong understanding of Canadian accounting and payroll practices
Proficiency with QuickBooks Online/Desktop and Microsoft Office Suite
Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Must have strong written and verbal communication and client service skills
Must have a resourceful mindset with the ability to find answers and resolve problems independently
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently
Experience with CaseWare and CCH products would be an asset
Experience with other cloud‑based accounting applications such as Sage and Xero would also be an asset
