Job Summary EFI Global is seeking a highly experienced Mechanical Engineer, P.Eng. with a strong background in mechanical system design, codes and standards, failure analysis, damage assessment and product liability. Experience with HVAC, building mechanical, fire protection systems and heavy machinery is required. A technical expert in litigation actions is a strong asset.
Primary Purpose To conduct incident investigations to determine the cause of failure or service interruption of mechanical systems and equipment, and provide clients with mechanical engineering consulting that includes root‑cause analysis, repair and remediation options, risk assessments and corrective actions to prevent failures.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Receive assignments and assess investigation needs.
Conduct inspections to evaluate design, installation, function and maintenance of mechanical systems.
Investigate failures, malfunctions, defects or damages and determine origin and root cause.
Determine scope of damages and provide repair or replacement specifications.
Provide design specifications and technical advice to clients on insurance claims, legal actions, risk assessment and regulatory compliance.
Produce detailed engineering reports on failure analysis, extent of damages and repair specifications.
Serve as expert witness in court, depositions, mediations and other litigation support activities.
Collaborate with colleagues and other investigators when leading or supporting investigations.
Collaborate with EFI Global international forensic experts to leverage knowledge.
Develop professional relationships with clients and industry groups.
Attend marketing and sales activities and social events.
Develop and present at seminars, webinars and industry conferences.
Additional Functions and Responsibilities Continuously update technical knowledge and industry trends.
Prepare and publish technical articles.
Comply with company policies and initiatives.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognised university.
Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.
Five (5)+ years of engineering experience, including failure analysis and forensic engineering.
Experience in HVAC systems, plumbing/piping, boilers, pressure vessels, machinery and heavy equipment.
Experience working with insurance carriers, independent adjusters, law firms and business executives.
Expert witness testimony experience is a strong asset.
Skills & Abilities Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
Comprehensive knowledge of industry codes and standards regarding mechanical systems.
Strong analytical and interpretive skills; root‑cause analysis and scientific methodology.
Strong project management and organisational skills.
Effective presentation skills.
Client‑satisfaction oriented and team‑player.
Work Environment Work in an office or remotely and at indoor/outdoor investigation sites (industrial, commercial, construction and residential). Travel up to 40% of the time, predominantly local but may include other provinces. Occasional lifting up to 50lb may be required.
