An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an setting that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them. Uxbridge Veterinary Hospital is a thriving small‑animal practice, 45 minutes north‑east of Toronto, with a diverse team of thirty‑six pet‑loving team members including six veterinarians. Our team prides itself on exceeding owner expectations while continually enhancing the quality of care we provide to our patients. We love our patients. It shows in everything we do.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in:
Gathering patient histories
Performing physical examinations
Creating treatment plans
Conducting diagnostics
Providing dentistry services
Observing, assisting,
or performing surgical procedures
Medical management of patients
Practicing communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships are offered to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For stipend amounts and program details, please refer to the stipend program documentation.
We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone belongs and is encouraged to reach their full potential regardless of age, race, national or ethnic origin, gender identity or expression, marital or family status, religion or belief, culture, sexual orientation, or disability.
