Externship Overview An externship experience is an unpaid educational experience. NVA hospitals will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Hospital and Services Our full‑service, progressive, multi‑doctor hospital offers a collaborative and positive team environment. From pocket pets to horses, cattle, exotics and wildlife, our mixed animal hospital is very well equipped to provide care for All Creatures Excellent & Small! Doctors are encouraged to develop their unique veterinary interests which enables them to offer clients a wide array of services including:
Orthopedics
Artificial insemination
Obstetrics
Internal medicine
Urgent & critical care
Dentistry

Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in:
Gathering patient histories
Performing physical examinations
Creating treatment plans
Diagnostics
Providing dentistry services
Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures
Managing medical care of patients
Practicing communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Duration and Eligibility Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Veterinary students in their second, third, fourth or clinical years are encouraged to apply.
Travel and Living Stipend Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
