Duties
Engineering Officer – SO‑MAO‑03, SO‑MAO‑04, SO‑MAO‑05

Supervise the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems

Supervise and assist in the training of engineering personnel assigned to the watch

Lead and/or participate in damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations

Maintain and update machinery maintenance records, engine‑room log and oil record books

Senior Engineering Officer – SO‑MAO‑06

Supervise, plan and direct the day‑to‑day operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems

Provide technical support to vessel client personnel to assist in the conduct of program operations

Lead and/or participate in damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations

Recommend and assist with refit specifications,



vessel’s additions and alterations and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel

Coordinate and supervise the watch‑keeping system and stand assigned watches on a relief basis

Make recommendations to the Chief Engineer regarding the engine‑room’s material resource needs

Provide all support necessary to ensure Canadian Coast Guard meets its mandate

Work Environment
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is a special operating agency within the Department of National Defence (DND). The Western Region Fleet offers dynamic careers and exciting opportunities along >25 000 km of British Columbia’s coastline, the Canadian Arctic, the Mackenzie River and Lake Winnipeg. Officers and crew support Search and Rescue, Aids to Navigation, Scientific Research, Icebreaking, Environmental Response, Waterways Management and Conservation/Protection.

Essential Qualifications
Occupational Certification

Stream 1 (SO‑MAO‑03, 04) and Stream 2 (SO‑MAO‑05): Valid Transport Canada Fourth‑class marine engineering certificate or higher (certificate must be submitted within one year of application)

Stream 3 (SO‑MAO‑06): Valid Transport Canada Third‑class marine engineering certificate or higher

Experience

Stream 1 (SO‑MAO‑03, 04) and Stream 2 (SO‑MAO‑05): Experience as a Marine Engineering Officer (Stream 2 requires greater depth and breadth of experience)

Stream 3 (SO‑MAO‑06):



Experience as a Marine Engineering Officer or Senior Engineer (greater depth and breadth than Stream 2)

Language Requirements (Asset)

Stream 1 and Stream 2: Valid Transport Canada third‑class marine engineering certificate or higher

Stream 3: Valid Transport Canada second‑class marine engineering certificate or higher

Experience

Refit and/or drydock operations

Marine engineering shore‑based positions

Senior day‑working engineer operational experience

Maintenance management programs

Staff supervision/management

CCG vessel or lifeboat station experience
