Heavy Equipment Operator (Fort McMurray area)
Preference is given to local candidates and those from the surrounding Indigenous Communities. Please highlight on your application if either of these apply.

ROLE
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment such as: Dozer, Loader, Grader, Excavator/Backhoe, Rock Truck, Skid Steer, & Packer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate heavy equipment to lift, move or place equipment or materials.

Load and unload equipment, being aware of situation hazards such as blind spots, pinch points, road crossings, power lines, conflicting right‑of‑way traffic and proper use of tag lines.

Operate equipment safely in various terrains.

Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.

Perform routine pre‑operation inspection and maintenance on equipment.

Fill out equipment logbooks.

Clean, lubricate and refuel equipment.

Communicate with the equipment spotter to discuss hand signals, blind spots, etc.

In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is considered an asset.

Heavy Equipment Operator Certification is considered an asset.

Various safety tickets/certificates as required depending on project.

EXPERIENCE

Junior:



Minimum 3 years of experience as a Labourer preferably in pipeline construction.

Intermediate: Minimum 3 years of experience as a Junior Heavy Equipment Operator.

Senior: Minimum 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment.

Experience with facility pad construction an asset.

Experience working around live facilities an asset.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Ability to read locate sheets and possible underground and/or overhead utilities.

Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures including backing up procedures, use of spotters, signage, incident reporting, required personal protective equipment and lifting of heavy loads.

Knowledge of equipment operation, cleaning and maintenance requirements.

Knowledge of facility and/or pipeline construction industry.

Knowledge of rigging and hoisting techniques.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a camp‑based position, with accommodations provided at Wapasu Creek Lodge. A daily bus service is available, with an approximate 30‑minute commute between the lodge and Kearl.

For workers residing in the Fort McMurray area, transportation is provided on Thursdays from one of the following four locations – Birch Mountain, Eagle Ridge Stop, Home Hardware on Penhorwood Street, & North Sands Lodge.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Heavy Equipment Operator reports to the crew Foreperson. The position has no supervisory duties.
