Job Description
Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician (Open to members of ATU 569 only) will embark on an exciting journey in the world of heavy equipment maintenance and repair. The apprentice’s training will align with the appropriate level of NAIT training to ensure successful progression in the program to obtain a Truck & Transport Journeyperson certificate and be eligible for a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Permit (CVIP) upon completion. You will be mentored by experienced Journeypersons and Technical Trade Coordinators who will provide invaluable hands‑on exposure to a wide variety of repairs, components, systems, and bus models.

What will you do?

Commitment to the Transit Fleet Maintenance Apprenticeship Guidelines

Learn by assisting Journeypersons in performing inspections, preventative maintenance, minor and heavy duty repairs and overhaul work on all components

Independently complete assigned tasks as you progress through the apprenticeship program

Contribute to ongoing workflow processes by entering detailed data and information into a computerized fleet management system

Learn and follow approved methods and techniques as set out in the manufacturer's manual and shop and engineering instructions

Progress from the ability to perform basic diagnosis to more complex diagnosis of systems through the use of diagnostic scanning tools, computer software and traditional methods

Demonstrate effective communication with shop personnel (e.g., Foreperson, Clerks, Controllers)

Diagnose and troubleshoot issues within a diverse fleet of buses





Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

Completion of twelfth (12th) school grade and the ability to pass the Alberta Industry and Trade apprenticeship entrance exam. Successful exam results must be available at the time of interview

Acceptance into the required Apprenticeship Program and ability to maintain passing grades and acquire the technical skills to progress in the program

Ability to achieve credentials as a Certified Alberta Journeyperson in the trade of Truck and Transport Mechanic within the established timeline

Two (2) years of experience in an operational/vehicle maintenance workplace

Eligibility to obtain and retain a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Permit (CVIP) upon completion

Skills required for success

Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel‑toed boots, is a requirement for this position

Team player with strong problem‑solving and interpersonal skills

Demonstrated work ethic with a willingness to learn and be mentored on the job

Adaptability to changing work environments and emerging technologies

Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job‑related task and safety requirements





Ability to accurately enter data and information into a computer (AssetWorks M5 experience is an asset)

Understanding of trade and related equipment and ability to apply it in locating, diagnosing and repairing vehicle and equipment malfunctions

Conditions of Employment

Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation (includes lifting 75 pounds) and a City medical examination

Work Environment

This position requires shift work. The ability to work a variety of shifts on a 24/7 shift cycle (minimum of 2 consecutive days off per week) is required

Heavy lifting, including lifting 75 lbs independently, is required

Up to 2 permanent full‑time positions.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Salary Range: $34,860 - $44,817 (Hourly); $72,787.68 - $93,577.90 (Annually)
