Detailed Overview
In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the registered nurse provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care to patients in an emergency department.

Responsibilities

Assesses patients and collects information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment; diagnoses and determines nursing interventions; plans, performs, and evaluates these interventions.





Collaborates with patients and their families/caregivers in developing and modifying the care plan, encouraging family participation and advocating for patient rights.

Participates in care and discharge planning, ensuring effective implementation of the care plan and coordination with the interprofessional team.

Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, delegates tasks to support staff, and makes referrals according to established protocols.

Works with physicians, licensed practical nurses, patient care coordinators, and other health care professionals to resolve issues and adjust care plans as needed.

Teaches patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance, assessing learning needs and providing demonstrations.

Plans referral information with patients and families, initiating referrals to appropriate health care/community agencies.

Documents assessments, diagnoses, observations, interventions, outcomes, and referrals per practice standards.

Participates on nursing committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned.

Engages in research and quality improvement activities, identifying patient care issues and recommending changes.

Attends in‑services and educational programs, maintaining clinical competence and knowledge.

Serves as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students, providing orientation and feedback.

Provides feedback to managers regarding patient care programs,



policies, and equipment.

Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current registration as a Registered Nurse with BCCNM. Completion of applicable postgraduate coursework in emergency or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Communicate effectively with patients, families, the public, medical staff, and interprofessional team via verbal, written, and electronic means.

Possess the physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
