Principal Data Engineer - Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)

Responsibilities

Lead and support technical teams to architect, build, and deploy cloud solutions for designated programs/services within the department and throughout the organization.

Plan and lead a large-scale data migration as a key member of the People Analytics team, overseeing the full project lifecycle.

Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines and ETL processes using Databricks.

Work closely with other VCH technical teams to support initiatives, focusing on ensuring the department's ability to deliver cloud-based solutions.

Apply strong design, migration, administration, and support experience in cloud environments (MS Azure, Databricks).

Education & Experience

Master's degree in computer science, information systems management, or a data-intensive related field plus at least seven (7) years of experience as a data engineer or equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar role.

Demonstrated project leadership experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

Proven ability to design, develop and deploy data solutions in a cloud environment, ideally in Azure and with Databricks.

Hands-on experience using AI assistants to accelerate development while maintaining code and data quality.

Ability to analyze current practices and implement best practices within data engineering, including CI/CD pipelines.





Experience setting up editor/tooling workflows that integrate AI assistants with Databricks to reduce copy/paste and speed debugging.

Expert-level understanding of software development, deployment and release processes, especially within a DevOps practice and toolset.

Experience evaluating/rolling out AI tools in a governed setting (policy, privacy, enablement, adoption).

Demonstrated hands-on experience building sophisticated and highly automated infrastructure.

Deep understanding of coding best practices and modern architectural patterns using SQL and Python. Strong skills in Azure/Databricks environment and scripting languages.

Demonstrated strength in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing architecture with solid knowledge of industry standards.

Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project-management, and planning skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment with a client/user orientation.

Ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams across different lines of reporting.

Demonstrated technical leadership with skills in teaching, coaching and mentoring others.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to communicate complex ideas simply to stakeholders at all levels.





Demonstrated attention to detail and maintenance of high-quality standards.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.

Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to enhance services with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous perspectives.

Principles of inclusion and support for all types of diversity at all stages of engagement.

Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
