Laurentian University is seeking an Industry Liaison Officer (ILO) to cultivate and expand external research partnerships with industry in the mining and minerals sector, with a strong focus on critical minerals. The ILO will play a key role in strengthening connections between industry partners and Laurentian researchers, facilitating the development of collaborative research and commercialization opportunities. Through targeted outreach, networking, and engagement with industry stakeholders, the incumbent will identify partnership opportunities, connect companies with relevant institutional expertise and funding programs, and support pathways that translate research and innovation into industry-relevant applications.

Reporting directly to the Director, Research and Innovation, the successful candidate will serve as a key connector between industry partners, researchers, entrepreneurs, and provincial intellectual property and commercialization resources. The role is focused on expanding industry-driven research collaborations, increasing access to commercialization pathways, and strengthening Laurentian’s position within Northern Ontario’s mining and critical minerals innovation ecosystem.





The ILO will work closely with the Goodman School of Mines and Senate-approved research centres to support industry-relevant research partnerships and contribute to the advancement of Laurentian’s broader mining strategy. The ILO will be a self-starter with a continuous improvement and innovation mindset. Responsibilities will include building and maintaining strong relationships with mining and critical minerals companies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), trade associations, and innovation partners; identifying and promoting Laurentian’s research strengths and specialized infrastructure; supporting intellectual property awareness and access to commercialization services; organizing and coordinating sector focused engagement activities; and maintaining institutional asset mapping related to mining and critical minerals expertise and ecosystem supports.

Develop and maintain robust relationships with mining and exploration companies, SMEs, trade associations, and innovation ecosystem partners to identify opportunities for collaboration.

Facilitate connections between industry partners and Laurentian researchers, research centres, and specialized infrastructure to support industry-driven research projects.

Promote and support access to research funding opportunities, intellectual property resources, and commercialization programs available through provincial and national partners.

Work closely with the Goodman School of Mines and affiliated research centres to support industry engagement activities and contribute to the advancement of Laurentian University’s institutional mining strategy.

Maintain awareness and documentation of Laurentian’s research expertise, facilities, and ecosystem partners in mining and critical minerals, and track industry engagement activities and outcomes.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

University or college degree in business, engineering, science, or a related field.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in industry engagement, research partnerships, innovation, commercialization, or economic development.

Demonstrated knowledge of the mining and minerals sector; familiarity with the Northern Ontario mining ecosystem is considered an asset.

Experience working with or within postsecondary research environments, including familiarity with research funding programs.

Working knowledge of intellectual property concepts and commercialization pathways for research and technology development.

Excellent relationship-building, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to engage effectively with industry leaders, researchers, entrepreneurs, and ecosystem partners.

Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
