Superintendent Forestry The City of Hamilton invites applications for the position of Superintendent Forestry, responsible for leading urban forestry operations and ensuring sustainable management of the city’s urban forest.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES Reporting to the Manager of Forestry and Horticulture, the Superintendent provides leadership to supervisory and operational staff, oversees short‑ and long‑term planning, resource allocation, and performance management, and supports the development of operational strategies and business plans.
GENERAL DUTIES Leadership and Workforce Management Provide strategic leadership to supervisors responsible for urban forestry operations such as tree planting, maintenance, risk assessment, removal, and emergencies.
Lead workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, labour relations, succession planning, and employee development initiatives.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, customer service, and continuous improvement.
Provide expert advice, coaching, and technical guidance on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements.
Act on behalf of the Manager as delegated and participate as a member of departmental and divisional leadership teams.
Service Delivery and Operational Management Direct planning, delivery, monitoring, and continuous improvement of urban forestry operations to meet service levels, regulatory compliance, and customer service standards.
Oversee development and implementation of annual work plans, operational priorities, performance targets, and resource allocation strategies.
Lead supervisors responsible for emergency preparedness and response activities related to the urban forest.
Establish and track key performance indicators, service delivery metrics, and operational analytics to assess performance and implement corrective actions.
Oversee contractor performance, procurement activities, service agreements, and contract administration to ensure compliance with specifications and budget requirements.




Direct investigations of operational issues, customer escalations, liability claims, and risk management matters.
Strategic Planning and Stakeholder Relations Contribute to development and implementation of urban forestry strategies, operational plans, business plans, policies, and service delivery models.
Build and maintain effective relationships with government agencies, elected officials, community organizations, industry associations, and other stakeholders.
Assist senior leadership in preparing reports and briefing materials for committees, Council, and external stakeholders.
Collaborate with internal divisions to support integrated service delivery and cross‑functional projects.
Financial and Asset Management Manage operating and capital budgets, ensuring effective financial stewardship of fleet, equipment, and material resources.
Develop budget forecasts, monitor expenditures, and support asset management planning and enterprise technology use.
Health, Safety and Legislative Compliance Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, standards, collective agreements, municipal by‑laws, and corporate policies.
Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture through training and hazard mitigation.
Ensure activities are conducted in accordance with Arboricultural standards and industry best practices.
Continuous Improvement Identify, recommend, and implement operational improvements, business process enhancements, fleet and technology solutions.
Lead evaluation of operational performance and service outcomes, using data and stakeholder feedback to drive continuous improvement.




Perform other duties as assigned which relate to the responsibilities of this position.
QUALIFICATIONS Degree or diploma in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Forestry, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
Recognised skilled certification such as ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Municipal Specialist, ISA TRAQ, RPF, or equivalent.
Considerable experience in a supervisory position in a unionised public‑sector environment or equivalent combination of experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of urban forestry operations, best practices, project management theories, and risk management.
Specific knowledge of tree species common to the Hamilton area.
Thorough knowledge of all applicable legislation, bylaws, and regulations.
Demonstrated ability to prioritise needs, formulate and implement work plans, and manage projects.
Strong leadership, investigative, facilitation, communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
Proven success in developing others through performance management, training, coaching, and succession planning.
Proven success in preventing and controlling workplace hazards and creating a safe workplace.
Knowledge of the Health and Safety Act, Labour Relations Act, and Human Rights legislation.
Strong written and oral communication skills for customer service and stakeholder engagement.
Proficiency with Microsoft, ESRI software, and enterprise asset management systems.
Valid Class “G” driver’s licence.
REMUNERATION AND HOURS Salary: Grade 7. Hours: 35 per week.
CLASS G DRIVER’S LICENCE REQ This position requires a valid Class “G” driver’s licence and proof of licence is required after hire.
