Job Details

Title: Family Physician – Maternity Care – St. Paul’s Maternity Clinic

Location: 1081 Burrard St, Vancouver, Canada

Job Type: Long Term (>8 wks), Category: Urban Locum

Proposed Dates: May 1, 2026 – Dec 1, 2026

Hours: Either full-time or part-time

Responsibilities
The clinic is located in St. Paul’s Hospital, a 5‑minute walk from the maternity unit, and is supported by two administrative staff, eight full‑time physicians, three midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, obstetricians, pediatricians, and internal medicine colleagues. Clinic appointments are scheduled every 20 minutes (30 for complete physical examinations) from 8:30 am‑4:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 12 pm‑6 pm on Thursdays. Physicians may work full‑time or part‑time and are rotated on day‑call. On call they are responsible for rounding on postpartum dyads, managing the inbox of results, and calling patients to follow up abnormal results. Call days may include optional virtual and virtual intake appointments. Approximately 30–35 patients are served per month during the clinic day, and nurses are able to discharge patients in early labour.

The clinic also handles urgent maternity matters for patients admitted to the Perinatal Substance Use service (low volume). Physicians also receive a daily stipend for call availability: approximately $550 for 24 hours on weekdays and $800 for 24 hours on weekends.

Compensation & Call
Billing can be conducted either on a fee‑for‑service or the new LFP payment model. Typical take‑home pay for a clinic day under the LFP model is between $1,200 and $1,400. Call pay will be provided via FFS with a current billing option expected by Summer 2025. Daily minimum pay is negotiable.

Training & Mentoring
Physicians lacking sufficient maternity experience may participate in the paid mentoring program MC4BC, which can be integrated over months or completed intensively in a 1–3‑month period. The program allows physicians to develop intrapartum care skills while maintaining workload flexibility. Physicians who prefer clinic‑only work may provide clinic services one day every two weeks without intrapartum responsibilities.
