Responsibilities

The Special Investigation Section (SIS) are responsible for investigations that involve sexual offences, intimate partner or domestic violence, criminal harassment, human trafficking, child, and elder abuse.

The Child Protection Team is a multi-disciplinary team that works at Sophie’s Place Child Advocacy Centre (CYAC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD) and Victim Services. This team conducts criminal investigations into reports of physical, sexual, or mental abuse of children 15 years and younger where the offender is of a chargeable age (12 years and older); person in authority; or there is a relationship of dependency and the alleged incident is believed to have occurred in the City of Surrey, BC.

Support Frontline members by assessing, reviewing, providing guidance and/or assuming conduct of child at risk cases described above where the child is 15 years and younger.

Utilize trauma informed practices to mitigate re‑victimization and conduct investigations into criminal allegations.

Work collaboratively with community‑based partners to assess, plan and provide ongoing victim support services throughout the investigation.

Conduct interviews with victims and witnesses (non‑offending guardians) in a supportive, compassionate environment, in collaboration with Victim Services, Ministry of Children and Family Development and the City of Surrey.

Support Frontline members by conducting interviews of children 15 and under at Sophies Place by experienced trained child interviewers.

Qualifications

Currently a serving police officer in Canada with exemplary police service and in good standing.

As per the BCPPS, retired police officers with less then three (3) years into retirement are eligible to apply (providing they had successfully completed the required police training from a recognized police academy, as noted above).





Up to date and current on all mandatory force options training requirements with their current police department.

Progressive education in a related field or equivalent work experience, supplemented by certifications and training demonstrating a track record of continuous development.

Currently or formerly, assigned on a full‑time basis to one or more of the following investigative units/teams: major or serious crimes, general investigations, homicide, sexual offences, domestic violence, human trafficking, hate crimes, child exploitation.

Experience in one or more of the following areas: file coordination, major case management, legal applications, covert investigations, surveillance, source handling, forensic interviewing.

Strong communication skills with the ability to document effectively, set out information clearly, meeting the needs of different audiences.

Strong teamwork skills demonstrating awareness of individual differences.

Strong ethics and a demonstrated history of professionalism.

Able to proactively develop effective working relationships with the community, colleagues, and other stakeholders, understanding their needs and concerns.

Able to manage conflict and defuse difficult situations.

Able to review and reflect on own performance objectively and to take steps to maintain and enhance competence and professional standards appropriate to the role.

Skilled in the use of standard IT packages, systems and/or databases to fulfil role requirements.

Demonstrated experience in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.





Able to obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance.

The following education is an asset:

Degree, graduate degree, or recent professional development in a related field.

This is an operational role so the successful candidates must:

Able to work shifts (including extended workdays (12 hours), nights, weekends, statutory holidays and rotating schedules), fully operational and fit for duty. This includes the following abilities and requirements:

Licensed and able to operate a police vehicle and attend calls for service.

Qualified and able to use issued force options as and when required (i.e. baton, OC, firearm).

Trained and able to engage the public in a variety of circumstances, including physical contact, if required.

Able to wear protective equipment, including body armour.

Be available to be on‑call as required to support operations.

Conditions of Employment

Successful applicants must obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance.

Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Successful applicants must complete 12 months of probation before they are eligible for a lateral transfer or promotion.

Please note: Substantive Corporals who are hired as Constables with SPS will be paid at 115% of SPS' First Class Constable rate*, providing they have at least eight years of policing experience. They must pass the Sergeant exam and complete SPS Sergeant training modules to qualify as an Acting Sergeant and to be eligible for promotion.

* SPS and SPU are currently negotiating a new Collective Agreement and wage information will change once completed.
