Position Overview
Reporting to the Director Health Services (Acute Care), the Mental Health Liaison Nurse (MHLN) is part of the Emergency Department Team and functions in a shared care model. The MHLN will assist and support assessment, treatment, disposition, and short‑term follow up of people experiencing mental health issues/crises in the emergency room, including facilitation of hospital admissions. The role requires independent judgment in prioritizing work and determining methods to manage unusual matters while adhering to the mission and policies of Southern Health‑Santé Sud.
Experience
Minimum of two (2) years acute mental health experience in the last three years.
Experience with the shared care model of mental health service delivery.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
Undergraduate degree in Nursing.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
Current registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba or the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba and the scope of practice as defined by the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
Current Canadian Nurses Association certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health.
Qualifications And Skills
Sound working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Vulnerable Person’s Act, Child and Family Services Act, Protection of Person’s in Care Act, and relevant regulations.
Knowledge of cultural diversity and practices of the population served.
Knowledgeable about psychotropic medications and substance abuse and addictions.
Ability to foster a team-oriented interdisciplinary environment supporting quality services, improvement, and staff empowerment.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Conflict resolution skills.
Able to lead and make autonomous decisions.
Analytical and inquiring approach to problem‑solving and program improvement.
Commitment to ongoing professional growth and competency.
Strong organizational skills and flexibility to meet position demands.
Proficiency in both official languages (essential for bilingual positions).
Respect confidentiality across all formats.
Good work and attendance record.
Valid Class 5 driver’s licence, all‑purpose insured vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.
Physical Requirements
Meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
Occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Travel to other regional facilities may be required.
This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.
