ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
NL Health Services – Eastern Rural Zone invites applications for two (2) permanent full-time General Internists within the Internal Medicine Program at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville, NL.
The successful candidates will work collaboratively with family physicians and other specialists to provide a multidisciplinary approach to patients in clinic settings, consultations, inpatient care, and on-call coverage. Outpatient assessments take place at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital and 5 Coish Place, with space shared with other specialists.
The team-oriented model of care at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital involves the Hospitalist on-call, Inpatient Nurse Practitioner, and Internists. All Internal Medicine and Hospitalist ER consultations are handled by the on-call Internist, who will conduct the initial consultation and outline a treatment plan.
The NP and Hospitalist are responsible for all floor issues and rounds, working collaboratively with the Internist. After hours, the Hospitalist is responsible for floor pages. The Internist on-call is responsible for patients admitted until they are handed over to the Hospitalist in the morning. ICU remains the responsibility of the Internist. On-call including holidays and weekends is shared equitably among site General Internists.
Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital provides services to a catchment area of approximately 20,000 people. The hospital has 41 acute care beds including palliative care, medical/surgical, obstetrics, pediatric, and ICU beds, as well as 9 ER beds and 44 long-term care beds. Services include anesthesia, chemotherapy, family practice, general surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ICU/Cardiac, internal medicine, laboratory, palliative care, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, respiratory therapy, ultrasonography, and 24-hour emergency (Category A). Visiting clinics include neurology and ophthalmology.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) with specialist training
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Internal Medicine (or equivalent)
- Eligible for and maintain licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Must satisfy credentialing and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Internal Medicine services
- Conduct initial consultations and outline treatment plans for all Internal Medicine and Hospitalist ER referrals
- Provide ICU coverage and oversight
- Participate in outpatient assessments at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital and 5 Coish Place
- Receive consultations from the Emergency Department, family medicine community physicians, and other primary health care providers
- Participate in on-call coverage shared equitably among site General Internists including weekends and holidays
- Work collaboratively with Hospitalists, Nurse Practitioners, and the broader interdisciplinary team
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements
REMUNERATION
Remuneration will be either salaried in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement for salaried physicians in Newfoundland and Labrador, or Fee-For-Service in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) Payment Schedule, commensurate with level of experience. Remuneration model will be discussed and confirmed with the successful candidate. On-call is billable to the Medical Care Plan (MCP).
