Reporting to the Dean, Faculty ofEngineering and Applied Science, the Sessional Lecturer will provideinstruction to undergraduate students.
Course Description NUCL 4700U – NuclearPower Plant Systems Design
Introduces the main design and operatingfeatures of nuclear power plants using pressurized and boiling light water,pressurized heavy water and gas cooled reactors; small, medium and largereactors; unit control schemes; shutdown and safety systems; reactor cooling,shutdown and emergency core cooling systems; steam generator design features,level and pressure control; turbine and generator design; feedwater systems;unit electrical, service water and air systems.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities The primary responsibility of the applicantis to (prepare and) teach a theoretically and methodologically sophisticatedand relevant course at the upper-year undergraduate-level within the parametersof the course description listed above. In keeping with a technology-enhancedlearning workplace utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, theSessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learningapproach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategiesand assessments which may be delivered in a hybrid format. The course will bedelivered in an in-person, on-campus format, and the Sessional Lecturer will beexpected to deliver the course from the assigned classroom at Ontario Tech.
The Sessional Lecturer will be responsiblefor preparing,
delivering and grading all course material and studentassessments and be available for consultation with students during andfollowing completion of the course session. The Sessional Lecturer will alsoprepare content for weekly tutorials. Learningobjectives and outcomes are expected to be described in a courseoutline/syllabus and will be provided. Timely marking of assignments and otherassessments, and the use of marking rubrics, is expected. The Sessional Lecturer will also supportprogram accreditation activities pertaining to the course.
This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website.Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.
Qualifications The successful candidate should have demonstrated strong potential for excellent teaching contributions, while showing an aptitude for teaching at the undergraduate level
Licensure as a Professional Engineer
Documented nuclear industrial experience in the topic areas covered by the course description is preferred
Required Skills A proven commitment to providing innovative and inclusive teaching strategies
Evidence of an ability to work in a collaborative environment
Excellent communication skills with an ability to maintain effective relationships with a range of faculty, staff and students
Preferred candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate students in a Nuclear Engineering program
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a Learning Management System, such as Canvas
Demonstrated ability to deliver classes remotely, using online modalities such
as Kaltura Media, Google Meets and/or Zoom
Proven experience managing undergraduate classes and diverse populations
Experience coordinating and supervising Teaching Assistants as applicable
Excellent organizational skills are needed to effectively manage course delivery, the marking of assignments and exams and the ability to respond to student enquiries in a timely manner
Education & Experience A PhD in Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent of education and extensive nuclear industrial experience
Priority will be given to an Internal Applicant who has taught any course for the University in three (3) different sessions in the past thirty-six (36) months, provided they meet the requirements for the position as outlined in the job posting.
