Commercial Litigation Lawyer

Mid‑size, full‑service law firm client based in North York.

Job Type: Full‑Time Permanent.

Target Compensation: $150,000 to $180,000 per annum, flexible according to experience.

Work Location: Hybrid – 2 days remote, 3 days onsite at the client’s North York office with free parking. 100% onsite during the probationary period. Onsite expectations may change according to client business needs.

Responsibilities Summary

Handle a broad range of commercial litigation matters with a focus on debt recovery, collections, and enforcement proceedings. Strong advocacy skills, practical problem‑solving abilities, and the capacity to manage files independently from start to finish are required, particularly in recovery, insolvency, and collections matters.

- Manage caseload of commercial litigation files with a concentration on commercial disputes, debt recovery, collections, and enforcement of secured and unsecured claims.
- Advise and represent clients in matters involving bankruptcy, insolvency, creditor remedies, and fraud‑related recovery actions.
- Draft pleadings, motions, affidavits, settlement agreements, and other legal documents.
- Appear before Ontario courts on motions, applications, and trials.
- Conduct negotiations, mediations, and settlement discussions on behalf of clients.




- Provide strategic legal advice to clients on collection strategies and risk management.
- Collaborate with firm partners, associates, and clerks to ensure efficient and effective case management.
- Stay current on developments in commercial litigation, bankruptcy, and collections law.
- Execute business and organizational development responsibilities for the firm.
- Additional law practice responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Education: LLB or JD degree from a recognized law school.

Professional Credentials: Licensed L1 member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.

Preferred Work Experience: 5–8 years of practice in commercial litigation with a focus on debt recovery, enforcement, and insolvency.

Sector Experience: Law firm experience required.

Technical and Language Skills Requirements

- Proficiency with legal case management, legal billings, legal research, and legal documents management applications.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications.
- Advanced English communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to speak a second language is an asset.

- Demonstrated experience in bankruptcy, insolvency, enforcement, or creditor remedies.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage files independently and work efficiently under deadlines.

- Demonstrated record of professional conduct and character. Responsible, reliable, and meets deadlines.
- Proven ability to handle confidential information professionally and exercise good judgment in interpretation and application of instructions and organization policy.
- Strong relationship‑management skills including client and vendor relations management, business networking, negotiation, change management, and advisory skills.
- Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions, and communicating within a framework of respect, equity, anti‑racism, diversity, and inclusivity.

Additional Requirements

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
- Ability to work both remotely and onsite, abiding by organization health and safety policies.
- Ability to promptly provide a minimum of two qualified employment references upon request who are available to speak with Marberg or Marberg's client.
