The Opportunity By late afternoon, there is still plenty happening in customs brokerage.
Shipments are arriving.
Documents are being reviewed.
Clients need answers. A classification, permit or tax decision may determine whether freight keeps moving or sits waiting for clarification.
That is where this evening-shift Customs Specialist comes in.
You will provide knowledgeable customs support during hours when good judgment and dependable follow-through matter.
You will work through entries, classifications and compliance questions, help solve operational issues and give clients and colleagues explicit guidance about what is required.
This is not a role where every answer will be handed to you.
There will be files that require research, situations where several rules may apply and deadlines that cannot simply be pushed to the following morning.
The right person will be comfortable assessing the facts, making a reasoned decision and asking the right questions when something does not add up.
The schedule runs Sunday through Thursday, giving you Friday and Saturday off.
For someone who naturally prefers later hours or likes having those two days together, it offers a practical alternative to the usual Monday-to-Friday routine.
Position Description You will work across the customs-entry process, from reviewing shipment information and determining tariff treatment to completing entries and helping resolve questions from clients and internal teams.
During your shift, you may be: Releasing, rating, classifying and accounting for entries moving by air, ocean,
truck or other transportation modes Researching the correct HS classification for a new product or part Determining whether a Chapter 99 provision applies Confirming the correct GST or HST exemption, Order in Council or other customs treatment Assessing whether excise tax or SIMA duties are payable Preparing a temporary or voluntary entry Checking whether a shipment meets Participating Government Agency requirements Reviewing permits and supporting documentation Adding properly classified products and parts to a clients customs database Reviewing free trade certificates and explaining what is missing or needs correction Answering customs questions from clients, operations staff and brokerage colleagues Helping resolve release or rating issues before they become overnight delays Supporting the compliance team with research or file review Prioritizing urgent files while continuing to protect accuracy Some files will be routine.
Others will require research, judgment and a careful reading of the regulations.
In either case, your role is to complete the work correctly, communicate clearly and help the shipment move without exposing the client to unnecessary risk.
Experience You have spent at least five years working directly in Canadian customs and are comfortable taking ownership of files that require technical knowledge rather than simple data entry.
You should have practical experience with customs releases, tariff classification,
rating or accounting.
You understand how valuation, taxes, trade remedies, permits and government-agency requirements can affect an entry.
You have worked with clients or internal operations teams and know how to explain a requirement clearly when time is limited.
You can also work independently, organize competing requests and remain composed when an issue needs to be resolved before the end of the shift.
Experience reviewing free trade documents, handling temporary imports, preparing voluntary entries or maintaining client product databases would be particularly valuable.
Qualifications The technical requirements include: A high school diploma or equivalent A Customs Certified Specialist designation Intermediate Excel skills, including pivot tables Working knowledge of CBSA requirements and Canadian customs regulations Familiarity with PGA requirements, customs valuation, GST or HST, SIMA, excise taxes and import or export permits A CTCS designation or another relevant customs or trade credential would be an advantage.
You should also be someone who can be counted on when the pace picks up.
You check details, research unfamiliar issues and make decisions you can support.
You communicate clearly in English, keep track of deadlines and do not allow urgency to become carelessness.
Because this is an evening position, you must also be comfortable working independently and consistently maintaining the Sunday-to-Thursday, 4:00 p.m. to midnight schedule.
Education High school diploma or equivalent Customs Certified Specialist designation CTCS designation is considered an asset
