Primary Purpose

This role leads the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of sustainability programs that build campus-wide engagement, capacity, and behavior change to support the University of Waterloo’s environmental sustainability and climate objectives.

Key Accountabilities

- Sustainability Programs
- Design, deliver, and continuously improve programs that enable participation and behavior change across campus, such as the Green Office, Green Labs, Green Residence, and Green Volunteers.
- Create best practice resources, provide mentorship, coaching, training, and support to ambassadors and participating departments.
- Collaborate with campus housing to support student ambassador programs and deliver program content.
- Build and strengthen student leadership networks, including collaboration with student clubs, societies, and groups.
- Design and deliver sustainability-related training and certificate programs for employees, including learning outcomes development, content design and facilitation, and program evaluation.
- Manage the Sustainability Leadership Certificate for students, supporting participation, building community partnerships, and evaluating submissions.
- Engagement to Support Institutional Initiatives and Behavior Change
- Collaborate with the Sustainability Projects Manager and partners to support the uptake and integration of new sustainability initiatives and projects.
- Translate project outcomes, tools, and initiatives into accessible programs, training, and participation opportunities.
- Identify barriers to participation and develop approaches to increase uptake and sustained behavior change.
- Provide feedback from participants and stakeholders to inform continuous improvement of institutional initiatives.
- Develop and implement behavior change approaches for energy and water conservation, waste reduction and diversion, sustainable transportation, and sustainable food practices.
- Event and Campaign Delivery
- Plan and deliver a calendar of sustainability-focused programs, campaigns, and events aligned with institutional priorities.
- Lead key engagement initiatives such as Earth Month, Waste Reduction Month,



sustainable transportation campaigns, and community-building events like Eco-Summit.
- Partnerships and Community Building
- Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Housing, Plant Operations, Food Services, Faculties, student groups) to co-deliver programs and embed sustainability into campus life.
- Support integration of sustainability into student and employee experiences, orientation, and co-curricular activities.
- Maintain relationships with community partners involved in joint engagement initiatives.
- Participate in internal committees and working groups as required.
- Program Evaluation and Operational Support
- Track program participation, outcomes, and key performance indicators.
- Support data collection related to engagement and behavior change metrics for institutional reporting.
- Contribute insights and analysis to inform program refinement and strategic decision-making.
- Maintain the Sustainability Office website and support annual work planning and prioritization.

Required Qualifications

- Education: Bachelor’s Degree required in environmental science, studies, policy, sustainability, or a related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Experience: 3–5 years of professional work in sustainability programming, behavior change initiatives, or engagement. Demonstrated experience designing and delivering programs that drive participation and behavioral change. Experience working in a complex, multi‑stakeholder post‑secondary environment is an asset.
- Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel for data tracking and basic analysis, Word for document development, Power Point for presentations).
- Strong understanding of sustainability concepts relevant to a post‑secondary institution (waste, energy/emissions, water,



transportation, sustainable food systems).
- Knowledge of behavior change frameworks (e.g., Community‑Based Social Marketing) and program design and evaluation approaches.
- Experience developing and delivering training and educational programs for diverse audiences.
- Basic experience with web content management software.
- Strong program and event management skills, including planning, coordination, partnership development, delivery, and evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with students, staff, faculty, and community partners.
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills, with the ability to engage audiences and support learning and participation.
- Ability to navigate differing perspectives and build consensus on sustainability topics in a complex environment.
- Experience tracking and interpreting participation or engagement data to inform program improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic workplace with competing deadlines.
