Job Type: Full-time Ongoing

Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30 – 4:30, flexible and possibility for hybrid

Location: Campbell River, BC

Salary: $80,000 - $95,000

JOB SUMMARY

The Controller is a key member of the Homalco Business Group’s finance team and reports to the Chief Financial Officer. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, and supporting the organization’s budgeting, forecasting, audit, and regulatory reporting requirements.

The Controller plays an important role in maintaining strong internal controls, supporting compliance with applicable government and tax requirements, and ensuring timely and accurate processing of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger functions. This role also contributes to the development and implementation of accounting policies and processes that support the financial health and sustainability of the Homalco Business Group.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Oversee accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and payroll functions.
- Support the preparation of budgets and financial forecasts and analyze variances.
- Prepare timely monthly financial statements and general journal entries.
- Complete month-end and year-end close processes.
- Support the annual financial statement audit and respond to audit requirements.
- Prepare regulatory reports, including grant and funding reports.
- Research and resolve technical accounting issues to support compliance.
- Ensure quality control over financial transactions and reporting.
- Manage local, provincial,



and federal reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Develop, document, and maintain accounting policies and processes that strengthen internal controls.
- Reconcile related party balances on a monthly basis.
- Oversee payroll processing and the maintenance of payroll records and employee files.
- Oversee the preparation and posting of accounts payable and expenses.
- Oversee monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and credit cards.
- Oversee customer invoicing and receivables.
- Perform other related duties as required.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

· Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.

- Demonstrated experience with month-end and year-end close processes.
- Ability to prepare and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance reports.
- Knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger functions.
- Experience supporting audits and annual financial statement preparation.
- Understanding of regulatory reporting, grant reporting, and government filing requirements.
- Strong technical accounting and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in financial processing and reporting.
- Ability to develop, document, and improve accounting procedures and policies.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple businesses, entities, or cost centres while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.




- Ability to handle sensitive financial information with discretion and professionalism.
- Proficiency with accounting software, payroll systems, and Microsoft Excel.
- Understanding of, and respect for, Indigenous culture, values, and traditions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

- Degree or diploma in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
- Professional accounting designation (CPA) is preferred, or currently working toward CPA designation.
- Three to five years of progressive accounting or finance experience, preferably in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience supporting budgets, forecasts, audits, and regulatory or grant reporting.
- Experience working in a First Nations, non-profit, public sector, or similarly complex organizational environment is considered an asset.
- Experience managing financial operations for multiple businesses, entities, or cost centres simultaneously is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of local, provincial, and federal reporting and tax requirements is an asset.
