Practice Details:

Northern Health is seeking Family Physicians and General Internists interested in providing inpatient care at Ksyen Regional Hospital in Terrace, British Columbia. This is an excellent opportunity for physicians who enjoy hospital medicine within a well-supported regional referral centre, while experiencing the exceptional lifestyle and outdoor recreation available in Northwest BC.

Position Overview

Physicians work on a week-long rotation, providing care to the unattached inpatient service. The service is designed to support manageable patient volumes, strong collegial collaboration, and access to specialist consultation when required.

Hours of Work & Call Responsibilities
Week-long assignments, beginning with handover at 0700 every Friday
Responsible for managing assigned inpatients from 0700 to 2200 daily
Overnight call coverage for all inpatients from 2200 to 0700, approximately two nights per week




Admissions are completed by the Emergency Department physician prior to transfer to the inpatient service

Compensation

Physicians may choose to bill under either the Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) payment model or traditional Fee-for-Service (FFS), depending on individual preference.

Compensation can be either LFP or FFS, and may be eligible for additional stipends/top-ups.

Physicians considering a permanent move to Terrace may also be eligible for recruitment incentives, relocation assistance, and annual retention payments.

Practice Environment

One physician covers the unattached inpatient service each week. Three local community physicians manage their own attached patients and assist with overflow coverage when required.

Additional features of the service include:

- Soft patient cap of approximately 15 inpatients, adjusted based on physician comfort and patient complexity
- Structured rotational process for managing overflow admissions
- Patients who become Alternate Level of Care (ALC) or have extended lengths of stay may be transferred to local clinic physicians through a shared coverage rota
- Strong specialist support and collaborative care environment

Anesthesia

Ksyen Regional Hospital:

Ksyen Regional Hospital welcomed its first patients in November 2024. More than double the size of the previous hospital, it is a center for trauma services, acute care, surgical services pathology, radiology, clinical support and pharmacy services for the Northwest region. The hospital staff prides itself on delivering culturally safe care to our Indigenous populations.

- 4 surgical suites, including a dedicated Orthopedics OR
- 6 ICU Beds, with potential to expand to 8

The new hospital will also include a Tier 3 neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery, which will provide community-based antenatal and postnatal services, education and parenting support to pregnant individuals.

The hospital is also a training site for medical students in the Northern Medical Program and residents through the UBC Family Medicine Residency Program.
