Job Summary

The Family Support Worker provides a range of one-on-one support aimed at promoting the well-being of children and their families. The position assists families with parenting skills, life skills, and home management skills by engaging families in skill-based education programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Attending client intake meetings to assist with service planning and to develop goal directed family service plans
- Provide group sessions, individual instruction, role modelling and coaching to parents on a variety of topics such as parenting, communication and social skills, problem solving, conflict management, child’s growth and development, goal setting, home management, personal hygiene and nutrition
- Participate in the development, modification and evaluation of family service plans with parents/caregivers at integrated case management meetings on a regular basis to report parent’s/caregiver’s activities and progress.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

- Post secondary education in Social Work, Child & Youth Care or a comparable Human Services Degree.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in child & youth services.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered.

The Family Support Worker should demonstrate competence in the following:

- Continuous Learning – Continuously acquires and applies knowledge, skills and abilities to enhance capacity andperformance.
- Can demonstrate awareness about the history and traditions of the Métis people and The Métis Nation of BC.

Skills and Abilities:

- Knowledge of Family Service and Child Welfare Acts and Regulations.




- Knowledge of child development and positive parenting skills.
- Knowledge of child abuse guidelines and reporting requirements.
- Knowledge and ability to develop group curriculum.
- Ability to complete client assessments.
- Excellent assessment, interviewing, crisis intervention, and case management skills
- Excellent group facilitation skills.
- Ability to teach a variety of learning styles.
- Excellent understanding of the stages of groups and how to move a group through the stages.
- Ability to identify, assess and support individual and group goals.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently or with a group setting.

Working Conditions:

- This is a full time, 18 month term position working Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30 in the Niwîķôwin office located in the city of Prince George, BC.
- Must be willing to travel and work evenings and weekends as required.
- Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service which includes a Criminal Record Check and a Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA).
- A valid BC class 5 Driver’s license and favourable driver’s abstract.

Special Conditions of Employment:

- Initial and on-going employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record check and vulnerable sector screening.
- Valid BC Driver’s License
