With a total regional population of approximately 4,500, Fort St. James is one of the oldest historical settlements in British Columbia with a federally restored national historic site. The main industries in Fort St. James are forestry, mining and tourism. The town is also a scenic gateway to a 300 km network of lakes and rivers. Northern Health is seeking locum physicians to provide clinic-based family practice, Emergency Department coverage, or a combination of both at the Nets'oojeh Hospital and Health Centre in Fort St. James, British Columbia.

This flexible locum opportunity allows physicians to tailor their locum based on their interests and availability. Locums may work exclusively in the community clinic, exclusively in the Emergency Department, or enjoy a blended rural locum that combines both family medicine and emergency care.

James is the gateway to a chain of rivers and lakes that traverse 400 kilometers of central British Columbia. The population of the Fort St. James area, including the municipality itself, rural areas and First Nations, is approximately 4,500 people. There is an established forest industry, a growing mining sector, and a growing tourism industry. Year round outdoor and indoor recreational opportunities include hiking and biking trails, soccer and ball parks, golf, fishing, hunting, water-skiing, canoeing, swimming, sailing and boating, alpine and Nordic skiing, skating, hockey, curling, snowmobiling, dog sledding and camping. Cultural opportunities include a Public Library, the Community Arts Council, an amateur theatre company and a movie theatre.

Qualifications:

- Eligible for full or provisional family medicine license with CPSBC
- Emergency experience
- Medical degree
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS): Desired Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS): Desired Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP): Desired Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) Eligible: Mandatory Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) – Emergency Medicine: Mandatory Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA): Mandatory Emergency Experience: Desired, Mandatory for ER Locums Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PAL): Desired

Call Schedule:

Hours of work: 9am to 5pm for clinic, or 8am to 8am (24 hours)



for ER shifts
On call requirements: 8am to 8am (24 hours) for ER

Compensation:

Estimated Gross Income

$1,566/ 24 hours (clinic), and Up to $3,500/shift + MOCAP + REEF; based on an hourly rate while providing in office direct or indirect patient care for ER locums

RSA Incentives

Travel and accommodation provided
Travel stipend of $250–$1,500 per round trip, based on travel time

Nats'oojeh Hospital and Health Centre:

The brand-new Nats'oojeh Hospital and Health Centre officially opened on January 20th, 2025. Nats'oojeh, "everyone healing" in the Dakelh language, reflects a deeper meaning of healing through medicine, holistic care, caring for loved ones and supporting one another.

Triple the size of the previous Stuart Lake Hospital, (approximately 6,300 square feet), the new hospital models excellence in health care, incorporating modern best practices and standards, as well as bringing multiple health services under one roof. The outstanding healthcare team is focused on the healing environment and providing culturally safe care for residents of Fort St. James, surrounding areas, and local Indigenous communities.

The new hospital features:

- 27 beds: 18 community care and 9 acute care
- An emergency department with two treatment rooms, a trauma bay, and a covered ambulance bay
- Primary Care Centre
- Expanded laboratory and diagnostic imaging.
- An in-house Spiritual Space and Gathering Space.
- Larger space for palliative care, including a palliative care lounge and garden
- Culturally and medicinally significant landscaping with outdoor spaces and gardens developed in collaboration with local Indigenous Elders and plant experts.
