Secondary School Bus Driver

Position Title: Bus Driver

Type: Full-Time

The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe commute of high school children to and from school. This position will also be responsible for operating the school bus according to scheduled routes.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Main Responsibilities

- Ensure the school bus is safe and in good running condition each school day.
- Safely transport students to and from the school in accordance with existing schedules and routes.
- Ensure the bus always has safety and emergency equipment accessible and in good working order, such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits.
- Maintain the interior and exterior of the bus.
- Escalate any safety issues to the Director of Education for their attention and direction.
- Ensure all students are aware of protected school bus rules and maintain discipline and orderliness of all passengers.
- Submit incident reports to the Director of Education detailing any unsafe behaviour.

- Maintain respectful and professional relationships with all personnel appropriate to an education institute which provides services to children.
- Be respectful and unbiased in carrying out your work responsibilities.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance.
- Knowledge of bus and student safety protocol.
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.
- Ability to assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgements when decision making.

Experience:

- Previous experience operating and driving a bus is required.
- Ability to provide a clean driver's abstract is required.

Education:

- Completion of a high school diploma is an asset.
- Must hold a Class B or Class E Ontario driver's license.

Working Conditions:

- Physical Effort: This position requires sitting for intermittently long periods of time in a vehicle for which attention to safety factors is consistently required. When upkeeping the school grounds, the incumbent may lift items up to 50 lbs.
- Work Environment: This position will operate a school bus in various weather conditions. Position requirements may require maintenance work to be completed outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Mental Demands: School bus drivers must always remain alert and aware of the road, while also monitoring the wellbeing and safety of student passengers.
