Under the direction of the Senior Operator Wastewater Treatment and Chief Operators, the Junior Operator, Wastewater Treatment you will support the safe and effective operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant by conducting physical inspections, responding to alarms, monitoring the Distributed Control System, and supporting sampling and analysis activities. Primary duties include:
- Inspect assigned plant areas, verify Distributed Control System (DCS) readings and monitor equipment to ensure wastewater treatment processes remain within established operating parameters.
- Identify, respond to and document process,
mechanical and computer-related abnormalities, resolve routine issues where possible and escalate concerns to the Senior Operator or Chief Operator.
- Collect influent and sludge samples, perform basic laboratory testing and record results to support the monitoring of daily plant performance.
- Operate wastewater treatment equipment and complete preventive maintenance activities, including equipment isolation, lockout procedures and adjustments to process controls.
- Maintain plant records and prepare operational reports, including equipment status, flow data, daily logs, safety information and other documentation required to support plant operations.
Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED or CAEC [Canadian Adult Education Certificate]).
- At least 1 year of post-secondary education or the equivalent 45 Continued Education Units (CEU) as recognized by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA), in a field related to water or wastewater treatment or leading to a 4th class Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) power engineering certificate.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent),
with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Success in this position requires applicants to hold safety as a value, as working safely is critical in all tasks performed and, in all decisions made.
Working Conditions: This position works in a wastewater treatment plant, where Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including a hard hat and air respirator is required. Work is physically demanding and involves working in difficult conditions and inclement weather. This position also operates equipment (such as an overhead crane) and works with chemicals.
Pre-employment Requirements
- A security clearance will be conducted.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
