Start Building Your Accounting Career
Nicole Cahoon Inc. is a growing CPA firm in the Comox Valley. We're looking for an enthusiastic first- or second-year accounting student who wants to gain meaningful public practice experience while completing their education.
Whether your long-term goal is to pursue the CPA designation or you're still exploring where your accounting career will take you, this position offers the opportunity to build a strong foundation while learning alongside experienced professionals.
If you're eager to learn, enjoy working with people, and want hands-on experience in public practice, we'd love to meet you.
What You'll Do
As part of our team, you'll gain practical experience in a variety of areas, including:
- Assisting with bookkeeping and accounting using QuickBooks Online, Sage, CaseWare, and other accounting software.
- Assisting with the preparation of personal (T1), corporate (T2), and trust (T3) income tax returns.
- Assisting with compilation engagements and financial statement preparation.
- Preparing GST, payroll, and other government filings.
- Organizing electronic client files and supporting engagement preparation.
- Communicating with clients to request information and documentation.
- Learning all aspects of operating a professional CPA practice, including providing exceptional client service and supporting the day-to-day operations of the office.
As your education, confidence, and technical skills grow, you'll take on increasing responsibility and progressively more complex accounting and tax work.
Why Join Our Team?
Working in our firm means you'll gain exposure to many areas of public practice rather than being limited to one specialty.
You'll work closely with the firm's CPA and the rest of our team, developing practical skills in accounting, tax, bookkeeping, estates, trusts,
and client advisory services. Our goal is to help you build a strong foundation for a successful career in accounting.
Our Approach
At Nicole Cahoon Inc., we believe the best accountants understand every aspect of a successful CPA practice.
As part of your on-boarding, you'll spend time learning our office operations, systems, and client service processes. This includes supporting the day-to-day operation of the office by welcoming clients, answering the phone, processing mail, organizing files, scheduling appointments, and assisting wherever needed.
These experiences provide an important foundation for understanding how a successful CPA firm operates. As your knowledge, confidence, and technical skills grow, you'll transition into increasingly complex accounting, tax, and advisory work.
We believe everyone contributes to the success of the firm. We're looking for someone who is eager to learn, willing to help wherever needed, and excited to be part of a collaborative team.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is excited to begin building their accounting career and is eager to learn in a public practice environment.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Currently enrolled in the first or second year of a recognized accounting degree program.
- A basic understanding of accounting principles and bookkeeping fundamentals gained through coursework.
- Solid proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Experience using QuickBooks Online, Sage, CaseWare, or other accounting software is considered an asset but is not required.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to interact professionally with clients and colleagues.
- A positive attitude, initiative, and a willingness to learn and contribute as part of a collaborative team.
- Previous customer service, administrative, bookkeeping, volunteer, internship, or office experience is considered an asset but is not required.
Successful candidates will be comfortable balancing technical accounting work with exceptional client service while contributing to the day-to-day operations of a busy CPA practice.
We're looking for someone who enjoys working with people just as much as they enjoy working with numbers and is excited to learn, grow, and build a rewarding career in accounting.
What We Offer
- Flexible scheduling around classes and exams.
- Direct mentorship and coaching from the firm's CPA.
- Hands-on public practice experience.
- Exposure to accounting, tax, bookkeeping, estates, trusts, and advisory services.
- Meaningful client interaction and real-world learning opportunities.
- Increasing responsibility as your skills develop.
- A supportive, team-oriented work environment.
- The opportunity to grow your career with our firm.
If you're excited to learn, contribute, and develop your accounting skills, we'd love to hear from you.
