Job Title: Client Assistant
Job Type: Casual
Position Overview:
It is the responsibility of the Client Assistant to provide, supervise or assist in the provision of resident care, administration of medications, maintenance of a clean and sanitary environment and leisure and independence-promoting programs.
Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of the needs of residents in residential care facility. This includes assisting in feeding, bathing and activities of daily living.
- Knowledge of the basic principles of personal hygiene and their application to resident care.
- Knowledge in equipment and material used in providing basic resident care.
- Knowledge of body mechanics utilized in moving, dressing or carrying out personal hygiene requirements.
- Demonstrated clinical, organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to make informed decisions in emergency situations and on a daily basis.
- Recognize own level of functioning, seeking direction when necessary.
- Take initiative for developing own clinical competency.
- Projects a positive image in dealing with residents.
- Performs other related duties are required, or assigned by the Manager or designated.
- Must be a team player, able to speak and read English, follow instructions, fast learner, ability to multitask, be very dependable and reliable and willing to work morning, evenings, weekends and flexible to work when needed.
- Ability to adjust to the hours and routines of assigned shifts.
- Hours of work are in accordance with the collective agreement. Yarmouth Heights is a 24 hours, 7 days a week operation, therefore hours of work cover days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Carries out tasks and daily work following the procedures, standards and job performance requirements of Yarmouth Heights.
- Is knowledgeable of fire regulations and the emergency plan and is aware of his/her responsibilities in an emergency.
- Must maintain confidentiality concerning residents, employees and organizational data and information.
- Cooperates with fellow employees and management and promotes a positive atmosphere for residents, their families, coworkers and visitors. Identify, assess and report any resident concerns, problems or needs such as physical and /or behavioural changes to the Administrator.
- Respond immediately to emergency situations involving residents or staff.
- Complete all documentation and charting on residents’ files, incident reports etc. as applicable.
- Prepare and gives report to next Client Assistant on duty.
- Provide coverage at Front Desk when other staff member must leave the area.
Education:
- Continuing Care Assistant Certification equivalent an asset.
- Nursing or Health Care related education considered an asset.
- Medication Awareness certificate considered an asset.
- Familiar with diabetes management an asset.
- Experience in long-term care setting an asset.
- Current Food Safety Training Program Level 1 an asset.
- Current CPR and First Aid certificates.
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (NVCI) or Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) certificate considered an asset.
- Grade 12 education.
- WHMIS and OHS certificates an asset.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with seniors is an asset.
- Effective oral and written communication skills to establish a caring positive relationship with residents and their families, physicians, pharmacists and other interdisciplinary teams.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to make informed decisions in emergency situations.
- Able to work well under pressure.
- Able to work well independently.
- Able to provide current Criminal Record check and vulnerable sector screening
Hours of Work:
- Eight-hour shift work, including day, evening and night shifts.
- Shifts include weekends and holidays.
- May be required to work overtime.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be in good physical health, with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs without risk of injury.
- Must have the ability to adjust to the hours and routines of assigned shifts.
- Must be able to handle emotionally charged conversations professionally.
