District Vice Principal of Indigenous Education

Reporting to the Superintendent, the District

Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education is the District’s Indigenous Education

lead, supporting the success of all Indigenous learners. Responsibilities will include:

- Leading, creating, and implementing programming to meet the requirements of the Indigenous Education Targeted Funding Policy and Form 1701 Instruction, including: working with local First Nations and other Indigenous communities to develop and implement language and culture programs in schools; academic and social-emotional supports; creating opportunities for Indigenous students to have voice, agency, and leadership; and, providing leadership, direction, and support to the District's Indigenous Education staff.
- Work closely with local First Nations on any matter relating to the distinct languages, cultures, customs, protocols, traditions, practices, or history of the local First Nations, and how they should be integrated into learning environments or staff training.
- Supporting the success of all Indigenous learners.
- Acting as the primary point of contact for

Indigenous rights-holders and stakeholders within the district, work closely

with the IEC, First Nations, local Metis communities, and other Indigenous

stakeholders.

- Act as Secretariat to the Indigenous Education Council.
- Work closely with the new Community Liaison to build and strengthen connections with students, families, and local communities.
- Provide leadership and support to all staff

in fulfilling their obligations to Indigenous learners.

- Liaising with and reporting to the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Qualifications

- Valid BC teaching certificate.
- Master of Education degree, or a commitment to obtaining a Master of Education (or relevant equivalent as approved by the Superintendent).
- Successful classroom teaching experience.
- Deep knowledge and understanding of local First Nations and Indigenous communities, including protocols, histories, cultures, and contemporary realities.
- Strong connections with local (or, for applicants outside of Fort Nelson, in your own community) First Nations and Indigenous communities, partners, and stakeholders.
- A demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, especially in regard to Indigenous peoples and education.
- A demonstrated commitment to Standard 9 of the Qualified Standards for BC Educators and the success of Indigenous learners in their own teaching practice.
- Clear criminal record check.

Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry, particularly those of local Indigenous ancestry.

This posting is now for a full-time, 1.0 FTE position. The annual salary range is $139 506 to $146 9778, with initial placement determined by experience and qualification, or 5%

below the starting range if the successful candidate does not yet possess a

Master’s degree
