THE OPPORTUNITY
The Operator – Drainage Dig Crew/Roads is responsible to operate all vehicles and equipment in accomplishing the operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the prescribed programs and services. This position’s duties and responsibilities will vary. Summer duties will consist of excavation and repair of underground infrastructure. Winter duties include snow and ice control operations and require rotating shifts, including days, evenings, and nights. This position seasonally reports to the Manager of Drainage and Manager of Roads.
This is a full-time, permanent position and is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
Salary: $34.48 - $37.31
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Drainage Dig Crew
- Ensure operations are carried out in accordance with all regulatory and guidance documents.
- Participate in the planning and execution of system maintenance programs.
- Operate diverse vehicles and specialized equipment in a safe and skillful manner to complete assigned tasks.
- Assisting with underground sewer service and repairs - excavation and repair by hydrovac and/or excavator backhoe.
- Excavation and repair of underground infrastructure.
- Operation of power hand tools.
- Accurate operation of survey equipment.
- Assist hydro excavating equipment.
2. Roads Maintenance and Operations
- Operate diverse vehicles and specialized equipment in a safe and skillful manner to complete assigned tasks.
- Perform all assigned tasks related to roadway snow and ice control operations.
- Spring Sweeping program.
3. Client Relations
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Develop and maintain ongoing working relationships with vendors, contractors and various City departments.
- Determine appropriate responses and required assistance to address emergent issues encountered.
- Monitor contractors to ensure they are working safely, and work is to the City's specifications.
Other Duties
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied,
as amended from time to time.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
- Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
- All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
- Employees are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED.
- A minimum of two (2) years' experience in the operation of various equipment.
- A combination of experience and education may be considered.
- Class 3 Driver’s License (or ability to obtain in the first 90 days of employment).
- Must possess the physical strength and dexterity to perform manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions.
- Road and underground construction and/or maintenance experience
- Proven knowledge of the methods, practices, and rules of the safe operation of the assigned equipment and occupational hazards applicable to the work.
- Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a manner that is sensitive to the needs of the public demonstrating strong customer service.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
- Municipal Experience.
- Confined Space Certification training.
- Ground Disturbance Awareness.
- Certifications and training in equipment operations.
- Concrete/Asphalt repair experience.
- Blueprint/Plan/Locates training.
- Gradesperson experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Valid Alberta Class 3Q Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with air endorsement (must obtain within 90 days of employment).
- Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver’s Abstract with a maximum of six (6) demerits.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- A 24-hour winter shift schedule will be in effect during the winter months, requiring rotating shifts that include days, evenings, and nights.
- Overtime may be required.
- Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic.
- Exposure to noise levels that may exceed 85 decibels.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Heavy Effort
- Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stairs, kneeling, manual dexterity, visual acuity/color vision.
- Climbing ladders, balancing, crawling, crouching, depth perception/night, lifting, pushing, reaching (both arms), use of feet (for control), pulling, outside work.
- Lifting to 20kg (44lbs).
