A Community Care Cook is ready, willing and able to enhance the lives of our residents by providing daily nutritious meals and snacks, in a safe and clean way, and realizes that the fulfillment and satisfaction that comes with helping others far surpasses the challenges of the job

General Overview
A Community Care Cook is a critical part of the Community Care team, supporting all aspects of optimal food service to meet the needs of the residents in accordance with infection control, quality management, legislative requirements and the standards outlined and inspected by Community Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Board (often referred to as ‘The Board’)
A structured daily meal plan has a wide variety of benefits,
including reduced anxiety, better sleep, and increased feelings of safety
Meal planning is very important for residents in particular for numerous reasons, such as, but not limited to:
- Household accidents are especially common in the kitchen
- Irregular eating leads to unwanted gains and losses in weight
- Eating the exact same foods or making unhealthy food choices leads to nutritional deficiencies
Additionally, residents with allergies and sensitivities can have severe reactions when they are not careful about the ingredients added to their food
Also, residents with certain diseases and those recovering from medical procedures are often put on special diets that require exact ingredients and preparation considerations
For all the reasons outlined above a Community Care Cook must be able to read, understand and correctly action meal plans and dietary instructions and they must ensure resident meals are clearly identified / labeled before they are served
Educational requirements include up-to-date certification in CPR, WHMIS, Food Safety, etc.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Storage
- Restock and organize food area upon the arrival of regular deliveries and as needed
- Store food in designated containers and areas to prevent spoilage when not in use
- Monitor and record the temperature of food and food storage areas and take action as needed
- Preparation
- Read and understand the menu ahead of schedule
- Ensure kitchen equipment and appliances are ready for use
- Gather food ingredients from the refrigerator or freezer as required
- Prepare meat, vegetables and other ingredients as needed for cooking and baking
- Prepare salads, breads, dressings, sauces, deserts, etc
- Make note of items that need to be replenished
- Production
- Follow recipe instructions and make adjustments as needed
- Quickly learn new recipes and food preparation techniques
- Prepare breakfast, lunch and supper based on number of residents with attention to portions to avoid waste
- Prepare beverages and snacks such as fruit, biscuits, crackers, tea, coffee,
- etc. at scheduled times, typically at 10AM, 2PM, and 8PM
- Dietary
- Read and understand dietary instructions as outlined by physicians and / or dietitians
- Serving
- Set and clear tables in the dining room
- Ensure meals are clearly identified / labeled before serving
- Help serve meals if required
- Cleaning
- Perform routine cleaning in kitchen and dining room
- Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, utensils, and dishes before, during and after cooking
Pay: $17.00-$20.00 per hour
