Reporting to the Senior Environmental Protection Officer the Environmental Protection Officer plans, administers and maintains approved programs and projects to ensure that the environmental conservation objectives of the Department are maintained and enhanced. The efforts of this officer will ensure that a safe and healthy environment is maintained in the Region. The role of the Environmental Protection Officer is to ensure the people of Nunavut live in an environment which is free of major pollutants and that the fish and wildlife populations are sustainable and are protected to consume in accordance with traditional practices.

The Environmental Protection Officer is responsible for conducting environmental inspections, investigations and monitor compliance of air, water and land pollution in accordance with environmental statutes, regulations and the Department of Environments Operations Manual.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized college diploma in Environmental Technology plus one (1) year of relevant experience. The candidate must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and submit a clear Criminal Record Check upon application submission. The ability to speak Inuktitut is considered an asset.

This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture,



land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
