The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is seeking qualified individuals to serve as members of the First Nations Appeals Tribunal on an as needed basis. The Appeals Tribunal provides an independent, fair, and impartial forum for the review and determination of matters arising under First Nations governance process. Tribunal Members play an significant role in promoting accountability, procedural fairness, Indigenous legal traditions, and sound governance while supporting the exercise of First nations jurisdiction and decision making. The successful candidates will demonstrate integrity, independence, and sound judgement, and a commitment to serving First Nations communities. Preference will be given to individuals with experience working within First Nations governance, Indigenous organizations, or related fields.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Conduct hearings in a fair, impartial, and respectful manner.
- Review written and oral evidence and render timely, well reasoned decisions.
- Apply Indigenous legal traditions, governance principles, policies, legislation, and applicable authorities when considering matters before the Tribunal.
- Promote fairness, transparency, accountability, and procedural justice throughout Tribunal proceedings.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgment free from bias or conflict of interest.




- Participate collaboratively with fellow Tribunal Members while respecting the independence of individual decision making.
- Contribute to the continued development and credibility of the Appeals Tribunal.
- Demonstrate professionalism, respect, and cultural awareness throughout all Tribunal proceedings.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess knowledge and experience in several of the following areas:

- Indigenous legal traditions, Natural Law, and governance principles.
- Inherent and Treaty Rights.
- Restorative justice, mediation, consensus building, or dispute resolution.
- Tribunal, administrative, quasi judicial, or adjudicative processes.
- First Nations governance and organizational structures.
- Interpretation and application of legislation, policies, bylaws, and governance documents.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision writing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to assess conflicting evidence fairly and objectively.
- The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Experience working within a First Nations community or Indigenous organization is considered an asset.
