Eligibility for the post-basic training education is prioritized to applicants with approximately two years recent acute medical/surgical experience upon pediatric program full time start date. Preferences will be given to applicants with high-acuity training.

BCIT Pediatric Emergency Nursing Specialty Program

BCIT Onsite Orientation: Nov. 19, 2026

Online Prerequisites: Nov. 30, 2026 -Mar. 30, 2027

BCIT Workshop Days (Paid): Nov. 30, Dec. 1, Dec. 3, Dec. 4.

Exam Days (Paid): Dec. 7, 2026 and Mar. 30, 2027

Full-time training at BCIT & practicum locations: Apr. 5, 2027 - Jun. 30, 2027

*course dates will be modified based on previous courses completed, VCH only funds for required courses.

Applicants must successfully complete the post-basic training education prior to working in the Department.

Candidates accepting this training opportunity agree to remain with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a regular status nurse in the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they are hired for at least 18 months subsequent to completing training.

This will ensure that candidates are able to consolidate and apply skills in the specialty area that VCH has supported and funded candidates to complete. In the event that a candidate leaves the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they were hired or VCH in under 18 months, VCH will seek to recover the cost of the program.

minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs)

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is proud to be part of the provincial implementation of minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs), an initiative aimed at enhancing nursing practice and strengthening quality of care across the health system. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit. Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Focuses on the care of pediatric patients and recognizing that children have unique healthcare needs that require specialized knowledge and expertise. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient care, participates in discharge planning, functions as a patient advocate and teaches patients/families about illness/injury and overall health promotion and wellness. Enhances quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family by documenting care provided and responding to incidents in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Consults, confers and collaborates with other health care providers, maintains and advances own clinical competence and participates on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects, as assigned.

Practices in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards and code of ethics for registered nurses. Practices within the scope of practice as set by the organization, as per VCH policies and guidelines/clinical practice documents and within own competence. This practice is aligned with the vision, mission, goals and values of the organization as well as with the concept of a patient and family centered care model.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

Post graduate coursework or a certificate in pediatrics including courses in breastfeeding and one (1) year recent related clinical experience working with a pediatric patient population, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement care plans.





Demonstrated ability to adjust to unexpected events, problem-solve, establish priorities and deal with conflict.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.

Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.

Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.

Demonstrated ability to deal with others effectively.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated ability to counsel and teach patients and their families.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership through initiative and problem-solving.

Demonstrated skill in clinical techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.

Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.

Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.

Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
