Department of English and Cultural Studies invites applications for the following teaching position to be offered in the Fall 2026 session.

Term : Fall 2026, September 8 – December 23, 2026 (final exams December 11-23, 2026)

Location : McMaster Main Campus – In-person

Projected Enrollment : 308

Projected TA Support : 6-7 TAs @ 130+3 hours (enrolment dependent)

Wage Rate * $9,435.73 (as per CUPE Local 3906, Unit 2 Collective Agreement)

Start Time and Duration : Two hours lecture/week – Wednesdays & Thursdays 10:30 – 11:20 am. This class has tutorials to be led by TAs.

Course Description/Relevant Employment Duties

What does the world look like when it takes a literary form? We will read and write about one or more literary genres or forms from various times and places, and reflect on the shape of literature, its place in the world, and the place of the world in it. The course functions as an introduction to the study of literature, equipping students with conceptual, analytical and writing tools that will help them become informed readers of the many modes and manners of imaginative expression. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the development of critical skills in reading and writing.

Required Qualifications

PhD completed (or near completion) in a relevant field.



The successful applicant must have appropriate academic qualifications, previous experience teaching at the university level, a commitment to incorporating principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in teaching practice, and an active and current research profile.

*Supplemented Fees- 15.02(a) The employee may be eligible to receive supplemented fees in accordance with Schedule C of the Collective Agreement. The actual rate of pay when in excess of the base rate of pay is deemed to include any supplemented fees owing, to the extent of the excess amount. If the actual rate of pay is less than the sum of the base rate of pay and the supplemented fees owing, then the employee shall receive the difference.

Pay Transparency Statement

The starting salary will not be less than $18,871.46 per 6 units, or $9,435.73 per 3 units.
