For Sessional Faculty

Department of English and Cultural Studies invites applications for the following teaching position to be offered in the Fall 2026 session.

Course Name(s)/Number(s) : ENGLISH 2CC3 – Settler Colonialism and Writing in Canada

Term : Fall 2026, September 8 – December 23, 2026 (final exams December 11-23, 2026)

Location : McMaster Main Campus – In-person

Projected Enrollment : 88

Projected TA Support : 2 TAs @ 130+3 hours (enrolment dependent)

Wage Rate * $9,435.73 (as per CUPE Local 3906, Unit 2 Collective Agreement)

Start Time and Duration : Two hours lecture/week –Thursdays 2:30 – 4:20 pm. This class has tutorials to be led by TAs.

Course Description/Relevant Employment Duties

This course looks at ways literary writing has contributed to and contested the formation of Canada as a settler colony. Examining a selection of literary works from the stories of European explorers to the present, this course traces how many works have provided the rationale for colonial domination of land and people in Canada, while many others have voiced resistance and imagined alternatives.

Required Qualifications

PhD completed (or near completion) in a relevant field. The successful applicant must have appropriate academic qualifications,



previous experience teaching at the university level, a commitment to incorporating principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in teaching practice, and an active and current research profile.

*Supplemented Fees- 15.02(a) The employee may be eligible to receive supplemented fees in accordance with Schedule C of the Collective Agreement. The actual rate of pay when in excess of the base rate of pay is deemed to include any supplemented fees owing, to the extent of the excess amount. If the actual rate of pay is less than the sum of the base rate of pay and the supplemented fees owing, then the employee shall receive the difference.

Pay Transparency Statement

The starting salary will not be less than $18,871.46 per 6 units, or $9,435.73 per 3 units.
