ABOUT US

ONSITE3D is a Calgary and Houston-based Virtual Design and Construction company and your integrated partner for project success. We work across the full project lifecycle: 3D laser scanning, point cloud processing, full-discipline engineering and design, shop fabrication, and field construction. We serve oil sands, refinery, midstream, mining, and petrochemical clients across Canada and the U.S. Gulf Coast. The scan informs the engineering, the engineering drives the fabrication drawings, and the field team arrives already knowing the asset.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are hiring an Intermediate Designer to take ownership of deliverables on active industrial projects and step into an expanded role on the team.

This is the right fit for a designer who has built a strong 2D drafting foundation, is growing in confidence with 3D modelling and point cloud work, and has spent real time in the field. Works independently with engineering markups and site conditions, and can put together accurate drawing packages with minimal guidance, and is ready to take the next step into full ownership of project packages.

Working alongside Senior Designers and Project Managers, you will carry assigned packages from redline to issue, provide guidance to junior team members, and develop the technical judgment and communication skills of a future lead.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develop and revise 2D and 3D design deliverables using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Plant 3D, REVIT
- Prepare plot plans, general arrangements, piping layouts, isometrics, PFDs, P&IDs;, and fabrication drawings
- Interpret engineering markups, specifications, and vendor information to produce accurate design packages
- Perform clash detection and assist in resolving constructability issues using Navisworks
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), Material Take-Offs (MTOs), and line lists
- Lead or participate in field verification activities and site walkdowns, translating first-hand site conditions into accurate design deliverables
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, survey personnel, and clients to ensure design accuracy

- Self-check all deliverables prior to issue and ensure compliance with company drafting standards and project requirements
- Review work and provide technical guidance to junior designers, and begin contributing in a task lead capacity on assigned scope

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Engineering Design & Drafting Diploma, Process Piping Drafting Certificate, or equivalent
- 3–6 years of industrial drafting and design experience
- Experience working within EPCM, industrial, energy, or heavy industrial environments
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and AutoCAD Plant 3D; working experience with Navisworks for clash detection and model review
- Practical experience working with laser scan data and point clouds in Autodesk-compatible formats (RCS/RCP/E57)
- Working understanding of process and industrial systems: ability to read and interpret P&IDs;, PFDs, and engineering documents
- Exposure to VDC deliverables including spool isometrics, IFC drawings, or construction work packages (CWPs)
- Working knowledge of ASME B31.3, CSA Z662, and industry drafting standards
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Solid communication skills and the ability to manage multiple deliverables across concurrent projects

NICE TO HAVE

- Experience in REVIT, SpoolFab, Blender or other CAD softwares
- Experience producing fabrication-ready or spool drawing packages
- Brownfield or tie-in facility experience
- Shop or fabrication yard exposure
- Knowledge of piping supports and structural interfaces
- Direct field experience: site walkdowns, field verification, or facility visits
- Previous mentoring or reviewing experience with junior designers
- Aspiration to step into a project or task lead capacity as the team grows
- Valid safety certifications including First Aid, H2S Alive, Fall Arrest,

and Confined Space Training
- Valid Passport (For International Opportunities)

WHAT WE OFFER

- Competitive compensation based on experience
- Primarily office-based with field exposure as projects require
- Work on real deliverables across active SAGD facilities, refineries, FPSOs, and mine sites in Canada and the US Gulf Coast
- Hands-on exposure to FARO HD laser scanning, SphereXG cloud delivery, ATS survey control networks, point cloud processing, and full-lifecycle VDC package production
- Structured performance reviews with a clear path to Senior Designer and technical lead
- A genuine near-term opportunity to step into a task lead or project lead capacity as the team grows

WHY ONSITE3D

Design work at ONSITE3D covers ground most firms never touch in a single decade: refinery turnarounds, mine site engineering without a single existing drawing, boiler and turbine outages at major industrial facilities, asset integrity modeling across multi-phase operations, water recovery infrastructure, and auxiliary systems inside automotive manufacturing plants. The scope spans upstream, downstream, mining, and industrial manufacturing across Canada and into the U.S.

The variety is real, but that is not what makes the role matter. All of it runs through accurate, field-verified data. We work from scan-integrated conditions rather than drawings that have not been touched in years. The design either fits when it gets to site, or it does not. There is not much distance between the two. The Designer here is not a support function. They are the reason fabrication arrives dimensionally correct, the reason engineering holds up under field review, and the reason clients do not find out about problems after a wrench has already turned.

As a CCIB-certified Indigenous-owned company, ONSITE3D is expanding into new sectors and geographies. The design function is part of what is driving that growth, and there is room for the right person inside it.
