Summary

Riverside Foundry (RFI) is seeking a capable, hands-on Tooling & CAD Designer to support the design, programming, maintenance, and coordination of tooling used in a non-ferrous sand casting environment. Working directly alongside our lead engineering resource, this role is central to new part development, tooling upkeep, CNC programming, 3D printing, and day-to-day tool room coordination.

This is a growth-oriented role. The successful candidate will bring a solid foundation in CAD and CNC programming and will be developed on the job into foundry-specific tooling design — patterns, matchplates, core boxes, and non-ferrous methoding. We are looking for someone who is eager to learn the casting side of the business and grow their responsibilities over time.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

- CAD Design & Tool Development

· Design and modify tooling components and patterns using SolidWorks.

· Perform draft analysis and apply material shrink factors based on specified alloys (with training and support).

· Reverse engineer existing tooling for modifications and improvements.

· Prepare CAD models for machining, simulation, and production requirements.

CNC Programming

· Develop CNC machining programs in Mastercam for matchplates, core boxes, core masks, and related tooling.

· Collaborate with tool room personnel to optimize machining processes and improve efficiency.

· Troubleshoot machining and programming issues as they arise.

Tool Room Coordination & Scheduling

· Maintain the tool room whiteboard and electronic schedule, including daily morning check-ins.

· Track tooling status and readiness for current and existing parts; flag schedule risks.

· Intake tool-repair feedback and concerns from production and log them to the priority tracker.

· Monitor machining progress and help adjust priorities to meet production needs.

Tooling Inventory & Asset Management

· Locate and track tooling assets across company facilities.

· Investigate missing, misplaced, or obsolete tooling and maintain availability records.

Material Procurement Support

· Process tool room material requests and obtain supplier quotations.

· Coordinate purchase order generation and track orders through to delivery.

3D Printing Management

· Prepare CAD models for additive manufacturing.

· Manage 3D printing projects from print prep through installation.

· Perform printer maintenance, monitor consumables, and remove, clean, and finish printed parts.

· Mount and install 3D-printed components onto existing tooling.

Production Support & Bench Work

· Monitor initial sample and production runs for tooling-related performance issues.

· Document tooling concerns during first-run production and work with Quality and Production to review casting results.

· Perform minor tooling repairs and surface defect patching on metal patterns.

· 1–2 years of hands-on CAD design experience using SolidWorks (or comparable 3D CAD).

· Working knowledge of CNC programming using Mastercam (or comparable CAM software).

· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and models.

· Solid understanding of machining processes, manufacturability, and general tooling principles.

· Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a shop environment.

· A proactive, problem-solving attitude and a genuine willingness to learn foundry tooling and casting methods.
