Engineering Team Lead – Transmission Lines Engineering (Structural Design)

Annual salary: $ 131,100.00 - 165,800.00

Position Highlights
The Structural Team is responsible for providing Engineering services on capital and maintenance of Transmission and
Microwave projects in the province of BC. For these projects, the responsibility of the team includes assuming Professional
of Record and/or Owner’s Engineer roles for analysis and design of wood, FRP, and steel transmission and
telecommunication structures. In addition to analysis and design, Engineering tasks for these structures may also include:
tender preparation and evaluation; witnessing of structure testing; assembly and erection plans; field reviews; and
construction support.

In addition, the Team supports the Shared Assets business group where the Team provides engineering design and review
of third-party cellular equipment attached to BC Hydro transmission structures.

Team members are also responsible for emergency or urgent response of transmission line outages and structural
damages caused by weather, ground settlement, geohazard instability, avalanches, deterioration and/or corrosion, and
accidents caused by crews or the public. Response may be in the form of structure inspections, design and analysis, role of
engineering emergency coordinator, site instructions, or engineering field support of temporary and permanent repairs.

Development and updating of BC Hydro standards as well as developing and improving processes are additional tasks that
fall under the Teams responsibilities.

The work setting is considered multi-disciplinary as the candidate will work closely with Electrical, Geotechnical and
Civil disciplines as well as Asset Management, Telecommunication, Environmental, Safety, Forestry, and Construction &
Contract Management teams.

The Structural Team’s focus is on technical aspect of the projects and management of those projects is supported by a
team of professional project managers internally and externally.

What you'll do

The successful candidate will lead and supervise a team of about 12 engineers,



technologists, and consultants to complete
the assigned work. In addition to the team members, the Team Lead is responsible for administration of Engineering
consulting services prequalified to deliver engineering work packages for the team.

Knowledge of overhead transmission line and telecommunication structures in design, and/or maintenance, detailing, and
fabrication will be an asset.

The Engineering Team Lead role requires general knowledge of various design codes, standards and design software
including but not limited to:

NBCC National Building Code of Canada
ASCE 10 Design of Latticed Steel Transmission Structures
ASCE 48 Design of Steel Transmission Pole Structures

CSA S37 Antennas, towers, and antenna-supporting structures
CSA 22.3 No. 60826 Overhead transmission lines – Design criteria
PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole, and SAFI Software
The successful candidate will not be expected to have expert level knowledge in all of the below duties but some exposure
to all and expert level knowledge in some aspects outlined above is considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to travel to remote locations for both emergency response and regular design and
maintenance works.

Specific Duties:

- Provides Safety and Environmental leadership including planning for staff training.
- Provides technical leadership and acts as an expert technical resource responsible for providing professional/technical

advice in engineering and projects within and outside the department.

- Enhances and develops methods to take advantage of new technology and improve team effectiveness and efficiency.

Make business unit strategy recommendations and create needs.

- Acts as POR for various Transmission and Telecommunication projects.
- Reviews, checks, and approves designs and provides recommendations for team member and as "Owner's Engineer",

reviews work by independent consultants and confirms that they meet BCH standards, specifications, good design practices
and constructability criteria.

- Establishes and maintains relationships with peers from similar industry and discipline.
- Conducts or assign resources to respond to scope and risks.
- Approves work packages for scope, schedule and costs.
- Initiates and help develop Engineering Standards, establishes review procedures, responsible for the technical quality of

the work, and ensures Professional practice compliance.

- Investigates and analyzes challenging or unusual problems of an engineering and project nature, develops alternatives,

evaluates risks and applies innovative solutions.

- Implements and maintains PPM Practices (BCH Project Management system) including preparation of design plans,

design basis and design report.





- Provides resource plan and allocation of resources to various projects.
- Develops staffing strategy and recruits, selects, and promotes staff, and/or procures consulting expertise.
- Approves expenses and training of staff, and invoices from consultants.
- Establishes and manages performance expectations, coaching opportunity, development of staff, and appraises staff

performance.

What you bring

- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering accredited by EGBC and/or recognized by

Canadian Universities.

- 10+ years of progressive and comprehensive experience in the transmission utility business with focus on structural

design, engineering and maintenance of transmission lines at or above 69kV.

- Experienced in the analysis, design and retrofitting of telecommunications structures.
- Registered in good standing, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and

Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

- Proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines, continuing education requirements and code of ethics.
- Good command of both written and spoken English combined with strong communication, technical writing and

presentation skills.

- Demonstrated values of safety, teamwork, service, integrity, accountability and ingenuity.
- Must have demonstrated strong leadership in management of design teams, conflict resolution, interpersonal skills, and

able to prepare and deliver appropriate directions to the team with clear and concise oral and written communication.
